Our first golfing day of the golf week dawned bright and sunny and we set off from the beautiful seaside town of Sesimbra to our game at Aroeira I. We started with a clinic on warming up and some swing principles that hopefully we could use today! Two scores to count from four was the format and despite everyone being a little rusty after the long UK winter, there was some excellent golf. The tree lined course certainly posed plenty of challenges and the sound of the ball on wood was heard a couple of times during our game! Shot of the day through the trees was Arnie’s hybrid on the 12th which went 170 yards with curve onto the green to secure a neat par. Peter played an amazing pitch on the 9th worthy of a Tour player. Both Vanessa and Mike had 4 point holes and Vanessa’s strong back nine helped her team of Arnold, Ronnie and David to the winning total of 79 points.
Second day, we went to Ribagolf home of European Tour Qualifying a few years ago. After a productive practice session we set out on the course. Unfortunately, a thunder storm curtailed our golf during the back nine, so I decided to call the team competition a draw for the day.
Off to Peru today, well Quinta do Peru anyway. A superb golfing day greeted us and after a brush up on our putting, we set out to play. We opted for a men v ladies today, with 3 pairs on each side and the result divided by the cumulative points. As you would expect it was a closely run thing, however the ladies ran out by 7 clear points. We looked forward to returning here on Thursday.
Everyone enjoyed the day beside the seaside on our non golfing day. Sesimbra is a lovely town and has a very scenic front on which to promenade. We all met up in the evening for a super meal at the Casa Mateus, with their fisherman’s stew getting star reviews.
Back to Quinta do Peru for our 4th game and a perfect golfing day with virtually no wind and temperatures in the 70s. We reviewed bunker play in our clinic today and on today’s game allowed everyone the chance of a practice swing in the bunker to assist their confidence. Personally for recreational golf I would allow it all the time! We played a DSG favourite of Waltzing Matilda and I have to say scoring was excellent. The quartet of Arnie, Frank, Vanessa and Linda G came up trumps with a slew of points. Arnie got his eye in with eight 3 pointers and one 4 pointer! Some nice short game skills from Linda and Frank, steady putting from Vanessa made their score unassailable on the day.
Friday our final game of the golf week was on Aroeira II. This is a fabulous course and a challenging mix of tree lined holes with strategically place water and as good a final two holes to finish as you will find anywhere. We reverted to best two scores from four today and again all teams finished under par. The winners today were Rita, Ann, Gary and Mike with an impressive 81 points also after a steady start, turned it on, on the back nine to win the honours. A nice drink after golf and a spot of prize giving, a very pleasant end to what was a super week.
Look forward to seeing you all again.
All the best
