Our trip started in style with an opening game at San Lorenzo. The weather and the course were in tip top condition, so a great day for our team of 4 event. It was a breezy day and made scoring tricky especially on probably the Algarve’s toughest par 5 the 8th. First in with what looked like the winning score was Rog, Mike, Pat and Jean with 78 points. However, with some terrific play by Bob A and his wife Margaret with some great 3 pointers from Henriette and the odd par from the old Pro, our 80 points won the day.
Monday morning is not always everyone’s favourite time of the week however, if you are playing the Royal Course at Vale do Lobo as we were, then it’s great! A super sunny day greeted us and with no wind the scoring was first class. Rog, Steve, Bob and Ronnie came in with 84 points with good contributions from all players. The winning quartet of Mike, Alan, Ian & Freda were out on their own with an excellent 89 points. We completed our Vale do Lobo day with an excellent dinner in their restaurant Spikes. The food there is spot on and the service is second to none in the region.
Our New Years Eve game was at pinheiros altos playing the excellent Pines and Corks 9 hole combination. Teams of 3 was the order of the day with one score to count and an individual competition was played for those wanting to chance their arm. The greens were the quickest we had played on the trip so far and a gathering breeze added to the challenge. On the ladies individual comp Freda had a very good 30 points. On the men’s side Rog compiled a solid 36 points, however Steve mastered the conditions with 39 points which was exceptional and a nice way to finish off 2019’s golf. Not surprisingly as they were in the same team along with a free scoring Ruth (3 x 3 pointers and one 4 pointer always handy!), they won the day with 47 points.
Everyone scrubbed up very well for to see the New Year in and after some bubbles to start a nice 5 course meal followed and at midnight a show stopping firework display, which was one of the best I’ve seen. The disco then got underway and our group threw out some impressive dance moves and kept going until past 1am. A super way to welcome in the New Year and after the exersions we all welcomed a day off.
The always impressive Quinta South was our venue for our first round in 2020 and although a little overcast, it certainly offered a much nicer option than the UK. We went for a pairs event and there were plenty of 40 plus points scored by various teams. Rog and Mick on 44 points were pipped on a back nine countback by Patrick and Jean, which I have to say was golf out of the top drawer. On an individual note Rog again starred with an excellent 39 points. In the evening we went to the reassuringly expensive Alambique restaurant which was terrific and although my credit card needed mouth to mouth resuscitation when the bill came, it was worth it!
Finishing our golf for the New Year week another round at San Lorenzo was the perfect choice. Limbs understandably were a little weary and reflected in the scoring, however the two form players of the week Rog and Freda combined to score 39 points, which won the day. On the individual front Keith scored an impressive 33 points to snaffle the sweep. This was especially gratifying as he came out with a new set of clubs for the week and so good to see they were making a quick return on investment.
A nice drink in their quaint clubhouse was a fitting end to a good NY week with good weather, courses and food giving us all a blessed beginning to 2020.
