Escorted Golf Tour Algarve New Year 2013-14

Twelve people from the Christmas week took the short journey from the less developed eastern Algarve, real Portugal, to Villamoura in the heart of “Algarve Golf” to continue their festive holiday. We were joined by a further 11 including 3 non golfers at the Vila Gala Ampalius Hotel. This venue with comfortable, spacious rooms, glorious sea views and short walks to restaurants and the port has proved an ideal New Year location.

The escorted golf tour for this week was played at Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo, the long established “Mecca” of Portuguese golf. As with our previous week and indeed last few years we played, in the main, under blue sky’s albeit the odd shower blew through at the latter end of the week.

The first days team event at Quinta do Lago South was won by Liz, Sandra, Joseph and Steve with a good 75 points. And the second day at Vale do Lobo Royal saw Joseph in a winning team for the second day running along with Alan and Ian scoring a superb 84 points.

New Years Eve we returned to Quinta do Lago South, having had our practice round we held the Individual Stableford. Not the easiest course and Kenneth was the runaway winner with 37 points from Alan, a distant 32. Jean, Kenneth’s wife made it a family affair as leading Lady.

We decided this year to have a private dinner in Restaurant Columbia for New Year, thank you to Joseph and Peter members of our party for the recommendation. Having dined extremely well some of us made our way to where else, but an Irish bar to see in the New Year. Now, we have all heard of the “Pub with no beer”, but an Irish Bar with no Guiness!! Only in Portugal….. Anyway, it didn’t dampen spirits and a good night was had by all.

Following a relaxing New Year’s Day the penultimate day 4 BBB was played at Laranjal, Quinta do Lago’s latest addition, a very different test to the established 36 holes and quickly becoming a favourite with many. Darren and Steve came out on top with a 40 points from 38 by Sandra and Ken.

The final day 4 BBB at Vale do Lobo Ocean couldn’t have given us a tighter finale. 6 scores between 32 and 36 were topped by 4 pairs coming in with 37!  Mick and Anne, Ken and Jean, who continued their good form from the individual event, lost out on the back nine,  while Peter H and Sue with a creditable 12 pts on the last 6 couldn’t compete with a strong finish and 15 points from Peter G and Joseph, who chalked up his 3rd win of the week. By common consent we returned to the Columbo restaurant for our presentation dinner and the end of festive fortnight.

My thanks to all those that attended one or both weeks, joined in the fun and played golf with a friendly festive spirit. Spending Christmas with,”seeing out the old and bringing in the new” with so many clients who we think of as friends is a privilege.
