Our first day dawned as most of them out here with clear blue skies and temperatures moving neatly towards the mid 20’s mark. The Dunes course was the setting for our opening game and the course was in terrific condition. We had teams of four with two best scores to count. Scoring was very good and not much between the teams after 9 holes. However, on the back nine the Arnold, Tony, Rosemary and Liz team pressed the accelerator down and accumulated 85 points which won the day. A nice drink on the beautiful patio in the clubhouse was a good way to finish our day. Then off to the nearby village of Gialova to the excellent Elia Restaurant.
Tuesday was our first game at the Bay Course and if the view from the Dunes clubhouse is excellent the one from the Bay is amazing with the course sweeping down to the sea. A better ball pairs competition was the order of the day and there was some super scoring. Liz and Vanessa played really for 43 points but were pipped by a point by Rosemary and Arnold. The evening was spent at the rustic Katerina’s Restaurant where we had some brilliant fish and then an impromptu go at Greek dancing, which the locals joined in to show us how it was done. As some of the party had their dancing shoes on, we threw in a few shapes back at Branco’s with Richard, Rosemary and Liz leading the conga!
Wednesday back to a warm but breezy Dunes Course which made for pleasing but tricky conditions to play in. Different pairings today but still high levels of scoring. Richard and Vanessa posted an excellent 43 points however, Tony and Mike rattled up 45 points which I was lucky enough to witness first hand. However, trumping every thing was Rosemary’s Hole in One on the 8th hole, which was playing right into the teeth of the wind. A goodly blow with the driver did the trick and with Vanessa’s one last year on the 5th, it is becoming quite a DSG feature here! Back to the lovely Gialova by the water for cocktails to celebrate the feat, kindly sponsored by Richard. A super Italian meal polished off a grand day out.
Our final visit to the Bay today and although we had a few holes of rain around the turn, the weather perked up by close of play. In the pairs competition Mike and Chris lapped the field with an amazing 46 points. We also added in an impromptu men v ladies match, won by the ladies by the finest of margins, which after a couple of drinks became a larger victory. A nice meal in the excellent Flame Restaurant rounded the day off.
Our last game at the dunes was fortunately another warm one and everyone contributed to their team score. With two out of four scores to count it was a close run thing with Mike, Jenny, Tony and Ronnie running out winners with 82 points. A quick turnaround after golf as we went down early into the lovely Gialova to enjoy some cocktails on the sea front before enjoying a brilliant dinner at Elia to close off a super week.
A breezy but warm day greeted us for our opening game of the second Costa Navarino week. We began by going to their amazing practice area and had a clinic on some of the the short game challenges the team would face around the excellent Bernhard Langer designed Dunes Course. The wind and some sporty pin positions certainly made for some interesting golf and pushed our teams of four counting two best scores to the limit. With a super overall performance Arnold, Tony, Debbie and Louise ran out the winners with an excellent 81 points. In the evening we went to the quaint town of Pylos and had a super meal at Aetos Restaurant to round off a fabulous first day.
On Tuesday our opening game at the Bay course saw some super golf from all of the players. Although the course was busy (the Costa Navarino secret is out around Europe!) pace of play was good and there was time to take in the amazing views. Charlie, Wanda, Arnold & Victoria amassed an unassailable 88 points which comfortably won the day. In the evening we had a dinner virtually on the beach at Kochilli in the lovely Gialova.
Game three on the Dunes and we met pre round for another short game clinic. We looked at distance control and using loft around the greens as anything running too low can tend to run off. Better ball pairs was the order today and the scoring was really close with only 3 points separating all the teams. our newcomer Victoria continued her brilliant form after linking up with Debbie for their 36 points. A good golfing day rounded off with a nice dinner at the Flame Restaurant based in the Dunes Clubhouse.
A well earned day off coincided with a small bit of rain which is rare down here, if the last couple of weeks are anything to go by. After everyone had had a good day off with a mix of lunching, sailing, reading and sleeping.
Back to the Dunes and we had a pre round clinic to loosen up our golfing muscles. A splendid day for golf ended up with two team tying on 83 points for their days endeavours. Debbie, Louise, Andrew and Arnold came in first then Junaid, Wanda, Bea and Me managed to tie thanks to an amazing burst of 23 points in four holes with Wanda and Bea getting their eye in!
Last day was like the previous golf day bright and sunny and our final trip to The Bay. A good day for scoring which despite some challenging pin positions the teams coped well. The winning score for the competition was 83 points with great contributions from Vanessa’s steady play, Charlie’s excellent approach play and putting, Debbie with her mastery of the par 3s (two birdies) and I managed a contribution on the first hole.
A great week rounded off with a fun dinner on the sea front at the brilliant Elia.
All the best
