ROBINSON CLUB CHRISTMAS WEEK
Our 6th Christmas at the Robinson Club where we again enjoyed good golfing weather throughout and great hospitality from both the Robinson Club and Quinta da Ria Golf Club.
Our group of 22 played golf in a fine spirit from Day 1 when Lynne Mike and Geoff took first place comfortably in the opening team event on the Quinta da Cima course with an excellent 82 points.
The second days competition on the sister course of Quinta da Ria was a much closer affair. A staggering 49 points from Richard, Glyn and Geoff for the first nine was followed by an underwhelming 31 on the back to be beaten on the last nine by Rosemary, Jean, Bob and David J!
The much looked forward to Christmas treat of a round at Monte Rei was, as always, a delight. I understand Portugal’s No.1 course, recently voted 9th in mainland Europe is to have a second 18 holes added, again designed by Jack Nicklaus with the intention of knocking the original layout into second spot! Richard and Rosemary blew the field away with a fine 41 points on their first visit here and a fine exhibition of how to dovetail in 4 BBB play. Mike and Liz runners up on the back nine from Bob and Trish.
Following play we moved back to the Robinson Club where the Christmas activities and fabulous food began in earnest and continued into Christmas and Boxing days with offerings of turkey, goose and wild boar, not to mention lashings of chocolate cakes, puddings, cream and ice creams….mmmmm!
Boxing Day golf was a slightly more serious affair around the Quinta do Cima course with an individual stableford to find our festive champions. Glyn on 36 taking the honors from Dougie’s 35 and leading lady Rosemary,34.
Names went in the hat for the final day mixed 4BBB on the Quinta da Ria layout. Richard and Lynne returned 41 and looking at other scores were probably quietly hopeful of a last day win, however, another dovetailing exhibition from Barbara and Steve, who I understand had a rather hot putter in hand, left them trailing a 45!
Another lovely Christmas at the Robinson Club had to come to an end and I’m sure it won’t be the last. A few of us moved on to Vilamoura and others to Dona Filipe to meet those flying in for the new year tours, rather grateful I imagine to be getting away from the snow and ice of the UK.
Hope to see you soon.
