Blog – Tavira Golf and Coaching – April 16-23, 2016.

We had a great opening day for our golf and coaching and set about blowing away the UK golfing cobwebs as most of the group had played little over the previous few months, due to the poor weather at home.  We focussed on fundamentals today with ensuring that our grips and posture were in good shape.  As a question I often post students “is it your set up or is it your swing?”  After working on that the afternoon was spent putting, then chipping and pitching and looking at the techniques there.  Eight of our group felt suitably enthused for nine holes and the rest opted for more chipping and then tea back at base.

Day two we worked on the range on swing path and the effect it has on our golf ball, sometimes good and well you know!  We tried a few drills out and worked on some ideas to take on the course later on.  The group paired up for a spot of 4BBB stableford on the beautiful Ria course bathed in sunshine with a light testing breeze.  There was some good golf all round, however courtesy of his four pars in a row and her enviable consistency, Steve Owen and Rae McPherson triumphed by a point with 41 over Jane Christian and Helen Dollimore’s 41.  We opted to change our day off to Tuesday as even in Portugal they get the odd wet day.

Wednesday we decided to have a bunker clinic as with the 185 on two courses there is a better than even chance that you will get into one!  After a recap on the range we headed on up to Quinta da Cima.  We paired everyone up again and Steve kept up his winning ways by joining up with Anne O’Brien and cruising home with 43 points.  Jane recorded a personal best on the course which was great, considering Cima is a very challenging course.

Thursday and Friday we looked at long and short game respectively, prior to going on the course.  The chaps put in a great performance on Thursday to win the Gender Trophy and Friday Jane and Naomi rattled up an excellent 42 points.

A great week all round and once again the superb Quinta da Ria facilities gave us an excellent back drop to the Golf and Coaching week.  I always look forward to returning there.

All the best
Barney
