Comporta, Lisbon – Portugal’s Hidden Golf Paradise
Every now and then, you visit a destination that completely exceeds expectations.
Comporta was one of those places.
I’ve been fortunate enough to play golf all over the world throughout my career – from Hawaii to the foot of Mount Fuji in Japan, across Australia, and many of Europe’s finest courses. Yet after just a few days in Comporta, I found myself saying something I never expected:
Dunas may well be my favourite golf course I’ve ever played.
A Journey Into the Pines
Just over an hour from Lisbon Airport, the transfer takes you through thousands of acres of pine forest. At times, you genuinely feel as though you’re heading into the middle of nowhere.
Then suddenly, hidden amongst the trees, you arrive at one of the most exciting golf developments in Europe.
The setting is spectacular. Peaceful, unspoilt and refreshingly understated.
Comporta reminds me of the Hamptons – stylish without trying too hard, with beautiful beaches, boutique hotels and wonderful restaurants tucked away in quiet corners waiting to be discovered.
Golf That Leaves a Lasting Impression
During our stay we played two rounds on Dunas and two rounds on Torre.
Dunas, designed by David McLay Kidd, is simply breathtaking.
We were greeted by staff with buggies and a lovely souvenir of a water bottle and bag tag. The clubhouse overlooks an enormous driving range that looks like it’s part of the golf course and the horizon.
The course winds through the pine trees, with every hole offering something different. There are no weak holes and no repetitive stretches. The routing feels completely natural, as though the course has always belonged there.
It’s one of those rare layouts that challenges you without ever feeling unfair, rewarding good shots while allowing you to enjoy every minute of the experience.
Quite simply, I didn’t want the rounds to end.
We also played the newly opened Torre course, designed by Sergio Garcia. It provides a fantastic contrast to Dunas and showcases another exceptional piece of golf architecture. With the course opening in 2026, the clubhouse is still to be built, although they do provide food and refreshments as well as a small pro shop.
Together, they make an incredible golfing combination.
Service That Matches the Golf
One thing that really stood out throughout the trip was the attention to detail.
The staff at the boutique hotel were warm, welcoming and couldn’t do enough for us.
At the golf courses, service was equally impressive. Water is provided on the course, the buggies are first-class, with the GPS giving you the exact pin placement, meaning, lasers are not needed. Everything is organised with a level of professionalism that makes the entire experience effortless.
Beyond the Fairways
One morning I took a walk down to the beach.
The coastline is stunning – miles of golden sand, peaceful surroundings and two beautiful beachfront restaurants that I wish I’d had more time to enjoy.
It’s the sort of place where you could easily spend an afternoon having lunch overlooking the ocean before heading back for an evening meal in one of Comporta’s hidden local restaurants.
The food throughout the week was exceptional and added another layer to what was already a memorable trip.
I’ll Be Counting Down the Days
Some golf destinations impress you, others stay with you long after you’ve returned home. Comporta falls firmly into the second category.
The combination of world-class golf, outstanding hospitality, beautiful scenery and the relaxed Portuguese lifestyle makes it one of the most special places I’ve visited in years.
I already can’t wait to return next year.
In fact, of all the trips on the calendar, this may be the one I’m looking forward to most.
If you’re searching for a golfing destination that’s a little different, somewhere truly special before everyone else discovers it, put Comporta at the very top of your list.
You’ll thank me later!!
