Following a most uncharacteristic week of warm spring sunshine in the Emerald Isle, my final hosting of a DSG Tour was welcomed with the more traditional Irish weather! I say this more as a testament to a superb golf course a few miles north of Dublin that hosted our first day. It was a true hidden gem, not mentioned in the same conversation as Portmarnock or Royal Dublin, however, The Island GC is every bit their equal. No longer so hidden being discovered by the hoards of American golfers and all of whom seem to have Irish ancestry? It is fully booked until November 2025 and commanding a green fee well in excess of €300 it truly is a gem.
I say all this as I’ve rarely, if ever, experienced groups of golfers finishing early after only 9 holes, soaking wet, cold but smiling and heaping praise on a course!!
Our second days play at Leytown and Bettystown was a dryer affair albeit cool and windy. A good test, playing more amongst the dunes and beach side going out, while a flatter test on the inner land side of the course coming home. Ali, Don A and Dick winning with a very respectable team score 71pts.
A far more benign day at the lovely parkland Luttrellstown Castle GC concluded the golf. A fine 4 BBB 41 pts from Andrew and Shetland Don F ( who travelled 24 hours by car, boat and plane to be with us) won the day, while another Scot, Ali, and yours truly put together 39pts to be runners up.
As always on these tours the golf is only part of the enjoyment. Accommodation a short distance north of Dublin at the Grand Hotel in the charming seaside town of Malahide. An ideal location just a short walk to a plethora of local restaurants and of course the genuine traditional Irish pubs. We find them all over the world, but in my experience non replicate the real thing and a drop of the locally brewed Black Stuff was enjoyed by certain members. Rumour has it that one evening included a few chasers too?!
My last officially hosted tour, but hopefully not the last time I enjoy the company of the many friends I have made through the years.

A typical David Short holiday,,,, goes at lightning speed.
Thoroughly enjoyable, even in the slightly challenging rain.
