This years Tour was centred around the picturesque town of Ilkley with accommodation in the Best Western Rombald’s Hotel. 15 bedrooms developed from a terrace of houses and a short walk from the town centre, this boutique hotel gives the feeling of being a house guest. An intimate bar in the front lounge, with an excellent breakfast and dinner served by the most helpful of staff was very much enjoyed by the group.
Our first days golf was played at the delightful Ilkley Golf Club. I have been told for many a year, by Julian, a Skipton member, and Peter and Joan Somerville, who are summer members there, how good it is and I wasn’t disappointed. Although not on the Tour, it was a pleasure they were able to join us for the day. Well, I’m not sure about Julian!! Playing with his good friend Peter, who just so happens to be President of Ilkley, and partnered by Liz and Rosemary, they romped away with the team event on 93 points with no inkling of guilt!! Any golf trip to Yorkshire will be the poorer without a round here.
Unfortunately, the second days play was rather wet. The bravest managed 9 holes and the sensible 5! Most unfortunate, as we all agreed that Keighley golf course in the conditions of the rest of the tour would have been most enjoyable. I shall look forward to playing it in better circumstances. This did at least allow us to get back to Ilkley and take a walk from the hotel to explore the town.
Day 3 we had an afternoon start and so embarked on a morning drive through the Dales and then via Harrogate played our individual stableford along with a team event at Northcliffe GC. A deceiving test after looking at the score card. Par 5’s and several of the longer par’ 4’s played uphill and into a good breeze making 6000 yards feel like seven! Ali who made the trip from Edinburgh was r/up to Val in the ladies event and a welcome new client, Barry scored a very credible 32 pts on a strange and tough course to pip Richard for the Gents prize. Barry, Edward and Patrick prevailed in the Team event too.
As one or two had to leave early, our final days play at Bradford GC was a casual affair and again a course very much enjoyed by the group. Glorious views over the moors, another course in excellent condition offering a good fair test, so standing on the 18th tee all square, playing against ever present Rosemary and Richard, we felt the half in fours to finish that way, was a perfect finish to our trio of UK Tours for this season.
A quick reminder that it is not too late to join us at the Staverton Park reunion 10-13 September. You don’t have to do the whole thing – whatever suits. And it is a chance to meet my fellow PGA Pro’s Barney and Aaron, along with website genius Jennie and that elusive man behind the scenes who makes it all happen, Iain!!
