After a few air travel issues brought on we believe by our French Friends (Brexit is going to run and run..) we all gathered for a welcome meal at the Hilton Vilamoura.
Our first game was on Millenium and although recent rains made the fairways a tad tricky, there was some excellent scoring. Teams of four with 2 scores to count per hole was the first days play. Despite a great deal of rustiness for many of us due to the inclement weather in the UK, scoring and general play was very tidy. First on the board was an excellent 81 points by Mike, Alan, Richard and Rog. However, the Bob, Peter, Rosemary and Pat quartet amassed 88 points to the the first day honours.
Off to one of our favourites Laranjal today and as usual the greens were in magnificent shape, running fast and true. Teams of four again today and three teams ended up within one point of each other, however cruising home by an eye watering 16 points ahead of the field was Mike, Bob, Rog and Gurdip with an amazing 88 points. Despite a long lay off Rog and Bobby played superbly with Mike continuing his recent good play and Gurdip chipping in with some 3 and a 4 pointer.
Day 3 at the local favourite, The Old Course. Another terrific day weather wise and such a joy to play golf in shirt sleeves. The course was quite quiet so in our three ball format we got round in under four hours. Waltzing Matilda was the game today and with the course playing really long the 72 points scored by Richard, Charlie and Peter was a first class score. We got back nice and early to get ready for the special Christmas Eve dinner at the hotel, which had turkey and an amazing array of desserts and free flowing wine too.
Christmas Day was a great day to have off and after a leisurely breakfast, we met up for Christmas lunch, Portuguese style. So replacing turkey was salted cod fish, which was excellent after the previous evenings food and a lighter option.
Certainly good to get back on the course on Thursday as we needed some exercise. Always a pleasure to play the Royal Course at Vale do Lobo and this was our venue for our game today. I thought a spot of pairs golf would be fun. We mixed up the pairs and ended up with some fantastic scoring. First to come up with 40 points were Gurdip and Bobby, soon to be eclipsed by Charlie and Les with a very sporty 42 points with some excellent play on the tough par 3’s. However. the two left handers, Steve and Mike dove tailed perfectly and came in with 44 points have got 25 points on the front nine. Another gorgeous day and always a pleasure to sit out on their impressive veranda and have a cold beer and contemplate the days play.
Our final round of the week was played at the sun kissed Old Course. We opted for a best two from four today as everyone had played the course and using that knowledge improved the day’s scoring. The fairways offered some run as a few days sun had dried them out after the recent rains in the Algarve. On 80 points Les, Gurdip, Rog and myself were quite pleased with our days work. However, comfortably out on their own 86 points, Richard, Rosemary, Jennie and Lee ran out the winners.
A super end to a terrific week and a lovely dinner at a Pasaigem brought the curtain down on our Xmas week!
