My GOLF TIP from the Wiltshire Escorted Golf Tour is to understand yardages.
The four typically British, older style courses we played on this tour often allowed the ball to be pitched ten or twenty yards short of the green to run on. This gives a false indication of your yardages. For instance, I carry a 7 iron 155 yds through the air, but here often hit a 9 iron that pitched short and ran 20 yds or more into the centre of the green, this is how many club golfers measure there distance. Put a bunker, water, steep bank, strip of rough, raised green and they are constantly coming up short on strange courses (especially modern designs overseas). A raised green, into a breeze, flag at back and that 7 iron of mine might easily become a 4 iron!
Remember, especially when trouble is at the front, very few of you carry the ball as far as you think!
Enjoy your golf – David
