The first day on our Tavira Golf and Coaching and we were greeted by unbroken sunshine and for many of our group it was a return to the uber efficient and relaxing Robinson Club. Our two first timers soon fell into life on this pleasing resort and I am sure they will join our ever growing band of returnees to this little paradise on the Eastern Algarve.
We focussed on fundamentals of the set up and introduced some ideas on improving our swing shape. For many players this is a great week to blow away the winter cobwebs and set up for the new golfing season.
After lunch (food is a constant theme here!) we looked at the short game and reviewed low and high shots in and around the green. A few bunker shots to finish up what was a successful first day.
Monday was our first playing day and we proceeded that with a video review of everyone’s swing. It’s always good to review your game in slow motion and makes implementing changes so much easier. Another fine day for golf and we all enjoyed our round on Quinta da Cima. Some good golf all round and for me it’s always useful seeing the differences from the range to the golf course for each player.
Armed with this knowledge the following morning we went over the short game and specifically what players could enhance especially in the world of shot selection. Our following session on the range then covered lining up, as I always feel this is golf’s most underestimated fundamental. These is where these weeks are so brilliant as you get to see your students in course conditions, something that during regular teaching at the golf club is difficult to do. A good game around Quinta da Ria with the splendid sea views made for a very pleasant day.
The day off everyone took the time to rest their golfing muscles and enjoy the sun and of course more food!
On Thursday, after a morning mix of long and short game, we went for our 2nd game around the lovely Quinta da Ria. A light feathery breeze greeted us and stayed pretty constant throughout the day. We had 3 teams and everyone contributed some nett and in some cases gross birdies. It was good to see so many of the group applying some of the ideas that we talked about in the practice sessions, especially on the aiming and short game front. Winners on the day with a very neat 45 points were Charles, Trish, Val and Graham with Charles pulling off possibly shot of the week on the 18th with a hybrid from under a tree (not sure we covered this shot). In for a quick reflective drink and then getting ready for dinner, it’s all go on these trips!
Our final day dawned as with the previous seven with unbroken sunshine. We had a review on the range before heading out onto Cima for our last game of the week, In our recap session we looked at some swing techniques, and most importantly taking that to the course. A nice days golf followed by and excellent dinner and some of us went to see the Robinson Club show which as with everything they do, has positive energy.
A good week with superb weather and an excellent group of students of the game.
See you on a golf course somewhere soon. All the best
