Having arrived at the well appointed Guadalmina Spa and Golf Resort, Costa del Sol, we were looking forward to our first game as we all left the UK in cold rainy conditions. Atalaya Golf Club was our first port of call and it was a compact tricky course. The greens were excellent and it only took the team a few holes to work out the pace, although a few more for us to work out the borrows! We went for a sixes format today with a change of partners each loop of 6 holes which is a fun format.
There was some good golf all round and highlight was Tolis driving within 10 yards of the green on a 290 yard hole. There might have been some assistance from a path, but we were not sure 🙂 Back to the hotel for a nice dinner and looking forward to enjoying the courses on site over the next few days.
We played the North Course today and opted for a pairs event. The course was tight in places, so a premium on tee shots here. Everyone had their moments and after a typically close game, it ended up honours even with Jan and Les on 39 points, as were Tolis and David. Jan was particularly on point with her driving and fairway play and was very steady all day.
Our day off was fortuitous as had it been a golfing one we would have been washed out. They say the rain in Spain stays mainly on the plain, well on this day it fell on the coast too! Fortunately it cleared up in the afternoon and was set fair for the rest of the week.
A good day was had by all on the South Course at Guadalmina. This featured some strategic tee shots and the scenic holes down by the sea. Despite the recent rains the course held up well and the scoring was good in the group. A nice lunch on their neat patio area nicely finished off a good day.
Our fourth game was at Alcaidesa Links Golf Club which has just amazing views out to sea and of Gibraltar. As usual by the sea, there was a solid breeze to keep us all honest. A picturesque course with some great holes which used the elevation we found on this layout. Les was on fire today and partnering David they amassed 42 points, which won the day. Highlight of the day was a birdie by Les on the signature downhill over the water ravine 11th hole, for the record Tolis made a nice par there!
Last day at Valle Romano Golf Club a marvellous complex with a super clubhouse. A great way to start our day with freshly brewed coffee on the veranda, looking out on the course. We went for 9 hole pairs event and then a change of partners. The opening 9 saw Jan & Les tie David & Tolis with 20 points each. The elevations providing some interesting challenges on our approach play. On the back nine Jan’s swing epiphany which resulted in two pars in three holes on the front nine continued and she played really well. With some steady support from our Canadian powerhouse David, they won the back nine very comfortably. A post round drink was equally as nice as the pre round one, albeit with slightly stronger liquids.
A fun week and we really enjoyed the variety of golf on offer, so look forward to returning to the Costa del Golf soon.
Look forward to seeing you all again.
All the best
