Another most enjoyable golf Tour of South Wales again based at the well received Stradey Park Hotel, Llanelli. Comfortable rooms, good food and excellent staff ensured a most pleasant stay.
We met at Southerndown GC for our first round with a weather forecast that was somewhat variable. However, today proved a lovely golfing day on the Downs with glorious views overlooking the South Wales coast. This classic course along with its grazing sheep brought in worthy team winners on 86 pts, Rosemary, Caroline, Colin (Stanley) and Alan, who obviously wasn’t sure they were scoring well enough, so just to make sure, weighed in with an eagle two for 5 pts on the 17th!
Friday morning we set off for Langland GC, Mumbles, on a wet and gloomy morning to a course renown for its glorious cliff top views. Fortunately, the rain eased, the wind stayed down and conditions were not unpleasant, albeit not the blue sky and high 70’s temperatures of last years event. Two scores of 36, a very good 37 by Caroline and Arnold were only surpassed by the excellent 39 of Vanessa and Alan in our 4BBB competition.
A lovely day greeted us for our Saturday game on a classic Links at Ashburnham GC. An individual stableford was the main event today, but to keep everyone involved throughout, a best two from three team event was played alongside. Liz, Don and Richard were comfortable winners with78 pts. Richard had a commendable 36 pts himself to beat Colin (Marsh) into second place and Helen was our leading Lady.
Notably, the course begins with a par three of some 180 yds today into a stiffish breeze. As we watched several groups of locals tee off and followed by our first groups only one tee shot had found the green until Tony stepped forward, hit his driver to about 12 feet and calmly rolled in the put for a birdie two. Well worth our shot of the week prize! The clubhouse is of the old style, walls lined with wooden competition boards and memorabilia from its days as a European Tour host. Fascinatingly, past winners include three winning Ryder Cup Captains, Dai Reece, Bernard Gallagher and Sam Torrance. Gallagher won the PGA Championship at Ashburnham in 1969 and a winners cheque of £1,024. Compare that to this years winning cheque for the same tournament, played annually at Wentworth now, of £833,330!!
Unfortunately, the British weather won the final day, two stalwarts, Don and Colin decided to brave the elements, but 3 holes proved enough. A disappointing end to what I think I can safely say was a most enjoyable few days and golf played in the best of spirits. Thank you to all participants for making it so.
