Our first day was at a breezy Pinheiros Altos. The quick greens were made all the more challenging by the wind. We opted for a team competition today and running out winners were the quartet of Bobby, Roger, Debs and Vicky. In the singles Bobby & Roger featured coming first and second respectively. The ladies singles was close with Sue pipping Jennie and Rosemary by a point to win the day. Quite a few gross birdies by the group today and pick of the bunch Martin’s excellent 2 on the 17th, with a smooth 40ft putt. A nice drink in the cosy clubhouse rounded off an excellent day. Dinner at the atmospheric Sr Frango’s is always a highlight, when you come to this part of the world.
Off to San Lorenzo today and another perfect day to play golf. For some of our party it was their first visit and those of us fortunate enough to have played it many times, it never loses its wow factor. We really enjoy the spell of holes from the 6th along the water with the amazing par 5 8th hole which factors in a top 50 holes in the world. The team of Bob, Arnie, Rosemary and Sue took the honours today with an excellent 78 points with all contributing to the cause. In the men’s individual, even with a cut in his handicap Bobby prevailed with 32 points and just one behind were Arnie and Les on 31. Jean underlined her steady play and after an excellent back 9 Rosemary was the runner up.
Today’s main event at the Dona Filipa Hotel was the James Bond themed party.
A great time was had by all with the hotel laying on fire jugglers, Bond Girls and dancing waiters. The evening was rounded off with some excellent dancing all round somewhere north of 1.00am our group made their way to bed.
New Years day was spent for many of us lunching and walking on the beach, which clearly in the UK we wouldn’t have been doing the latter! Everyone had an early night in preparation for our visit to the Royal, our first round of 2019.
Another super day greeted us and we took the short hop to the Vale do Lobo complex. We opted for a team event today with 2 out of 4 to count. The greens were at an excellent speed and plenty of putts were being holed. A close run event today with Jean, Ken, Bob and Mike winning by the slenderest of margins (one point) from Richard, Rosemary, Vicky & Les, 86 to 85. On the individual front, Jean had a stellar day and racked up 40 points! Rosemary continued her good form with 34 points and runner up spot. In the men’s event we had new winner in the shape of Kenneth with an excellent 34 points. Bobby continued his rich vein of form, 30 points , even off his new DSG handicap.
On our second visit to Pinheiros Altos we played the Olive nine and my favourite the Pines. An interesting contrast with the set up of the holes here, each offering a different set of challenges. A pairs event was the plan today and scoring was very tidy after a slightly cool start to our day. Two pairs, Arnold & Les and Colin & Bob scored 38 points, however the ladies duo of Jean and Debs took the honours with 39 points. Jean and Les were individual winners of the day and it was noticeable that as the temperature rose so the scoring improved. Sixteen of our party went to the wonderful Alambique restaurant this evening and it would be fair to say that everyone had an excellent meal. Fabulous restaurant.
Our last day at super San Lorenzo was blessed with sunshine. We reverted to a best two of four competition today. With some excellent dovetailing the Bob, Mike, Julian and Sue quartet came up trumps and won the day with 80 points. Julian’s birdie on the uphill into the wind par 5 15th was a particular highlight, a 144 yard hole out! Roger kept his steady play of the week up and scored an impressive 37 points. Rosemary was the ladies winner rounding off a very consistent weeks golf.
A good New Years week was rounded off with farewell drinks and dinner. Good fortune smiled on us on the weather front and this was a really fun way to begin 2019.
Look forward to seeing you all again.
All the best
