Our return to the Doña Filipa Hotel and San Lorenzo golf course after many years was without doubt a resounding success. The maximum group of 16 enjoyed 3 rounds on the renowned Sao Lorenzo course and 2 at the more challenging but equally enjoyable Pinheiros Altos.
The coaching element on the clinic weeks is optional and quite light so as not to interfere too much with playing each day. Danny reminded me of the Harvey Pennick quote, “If the doctor prescribes a bottle of medicine you take it a spoonful at a time and don’t drink it all at once.” We would do well to remember that at all times when it comes to trying to improve our golf, but especially on a week such as this.
The group met on Saturday evening and enjoyed the hotel buffet included in the package as was the fabulous Wednesday night sea food buffet. Whilst we ate out as a group on the other evenings, unusually, I think it fair to say, the hotel topped them all!
The first 2 days golf were team events, one at each venue and Helen, Diane, Maggie and Debbie were San Lorenzo winners while Helen & Maggie again, with Vivienne and myself topped the list at Penheiros Altos.
Having warmed up on each course a 4BBB on Tuesday was a tight run affair – Helen & Vivienne were second on the back 9 with 34pts and pipped by Hilary & Peter on 35!
Wednesday was a free day, but a keen group came down to the practice area where I took them right back to basics and explained that it is easy to get caught up in with a head full of tips and therefor lose the very essence of what makes for better golf. I think this was much appreciated, understood, and will be put into practice during the coming months.
Back to the tougher Penheiros Altos on Thursday to find our individual winner of the week and Maggie triumphed over Marion by one point, who in turn beat Danny into third place on the back nine.
Friday again dawned with blue skies, a light breeze and lovely conditions for the final days 4BBB.
The scoring was close 34’s, 35’s, a second place 36 from Vivienne & Kathleen, until Colin & Maggie handed me their card and blew us all away with a magnificent 43. OBVIOUSLY (Maggie & Hilary take note) Maggie was our star of the week, but Colin did more than his fair share of the damage on this occasion!!
A return to this venue is guaranteed next year with many of this group already provisionally booked and no doubt a further week will be added. Along with La Cala in Spain, it appears destined to be an annual event.
Hope to see you soon
