Arrival Day – An early start for our team leaving Luton at 06.30, for our golf trip however fortified with bacon butties and porridge we set off. Sadly on arrival we found Faro suffering from what the UK loves – rain! We decided that our afternoon practice session was not beneficial in the wind and rain, so lunch in the excellent Sandbanks of fish and Pinot Grigio was the preferred option. A welcome snooze followed by a nice dinner in the Dona Filipa, set us up for a better weather day at Laranjal.
Golf Laranjal – Although windy, blue skies greeted us at one of our favourite courses, Laranjal. We had teams of three and went for the Waltzing Matilda format of 1,2,3 scores to count. The greens are particularly challenging and a brisk pace and I thought the ladies did well as not many of us had played on that pace of surface for at least 6 months! The trio of Suzi, Ali and Jennie came out on top with an impressive 68 points. Highlights of the day were Sarah’s birdie on the treacherous 9th, Jennie’s two 2’s on the 8th and 11th. Great day rounded off with Cocktails at the hotel, then a visit to Sr Frango’s for a quiet night out!
Another band of rain greeted us this morning, so again the coaching with postponed and turned into a shopping session. There was a window of opportunity in the afternoon of dry weather, so 9 holes at Pinheiros Altos in sunshine was great. We had a pairs event and the course was in excellent shape considering. Ali and Jennie came up trumps with 18 points. Dinner at the truly excellent A Quinta was amazing and is definitely now in my top 5 restaurants in the Algarve.
A super sunny day greated us for our day at San Lorenzo. After a little fun on the 1st Tee where Sarah had to endure the exploding golf ball trick (courtesy of her family!) we set off to play one of the Algarve’s favourites. The holes facing the sea once again were the highlight and everyone experienced different degrees of success. In our pairs event today Ali and Rosemary scored 37 points which was excellent for players that had not played San Lorenzo before. We rounded the day off with dinner at Alambique which was excellent.
As we were not leaving until after lunch, we re-arranged our coaching session at Pinheiros Altos to this morning and spent a couple of hours honing everyone’s skills for their return to the UK. For perfect symmetry we finished off the trip with lunch at Sandbanks and everyone agreed that it was a successful few days, despite some bursts of challenging weather.
All the best
