For this years New Year golf tour festivities we moved to the 5 star Tivoli Hotel on the Marina at Vilamoura, a move requested and well received by our regular attendees. It did give me some cause for amusement though, being told how much better the upgrade was and then listening to the complaints of the 5 star price of a gin & tonic by the very same people!
As always the golf here was first class, Quinta Do Lago South possibly the pick of the bunch and Laranjal as always a great pleasure to play our final round. Not that those in between, the Royal and Ocean courses at Vale do Lobo and probably the toughest test, Vila Sol, fall far behind! Excellent golf and in the main, as with Christmas, played in warm sunshine!
We warmed up with a team event at Quinta do Lago South and as it seems has become her habit on the first day, Rosemary, partnered by Amalie and Alan led in the leading team with 78 points.
New Years Eve took us to the Ocean course at Vale do Lobo, where playing a best two from three with all to count on par 3’s, Diane, Kaye and Bob put together a formidable 92 pts. The new year festivities followed and were seen in at a local restaurant overlooking the Marina, where ailing backs, knees awaiting replacement etc. were anaesthetised it seems – by what I can’t imagine – and midnight was seen in in lively fashion!!
The whole group turned up at the Royal course and for the main part, in fine health for our New Years Day 4 BBB competition! Kaye and Trish were the leading ladies pair on 35. My favourite named pair, Bob, Martin, had obviously taken their doggie pills with a fine 40, which leads me to ask what Dr Kenneth prescribed wife Jean and himself for a magnificent winning 42?
Vila Sol seems to be a bit of a love or hate course. It is without doubt a fine test. One of the toughest starts I know with three long, narrow, par fours which can play on the mind. While disappointing, 3 points after 3 would not be a bad start! Rosemary and Amalie this time partnered by Richard and Steve found no such problems though to win with 78 pts. However, as embarrassed as I am to mention it, for me, my hole in one on the 200 yard 15th, accomplished with my new Ping Crossover 4 iron was the highlight of the day! Actually, I think Martin one of my playing partners who took the picture was more excited than me!
So, with my colleague Barney and David Hirst both achieving the same in the same week in Madeira last year and Jennie soon thereafter, 2017 is off to a good start. Please let us know when you achieve your hole in one, along with a photo if possible.
An individual stableford at Laranjel brought the week to a close. Bob winning with a solid 35 from Julian’s 33 and the ever present Rosemary leading lady on 32. As usual a most enjoyable week played in great holiday spirit by a fine bunch of people.
Next year I shall be repeating this week in Vilamoura and Barney’s week will move to the Dona Filipa hotel, again both are well booked with repeat bookings, so please contact Iain sooner rather an later if you are interested.
Enjoy your golf
