Day One Pineros Altos – Off to the challenging Pineros Altos and decided on a pairs competition with a 4BBB today’s preferred style. The weather was pleasant, doubly so as we were hearing about all the ice, snow and general cold back in the UK. After a few holes everyone started to get a feel of the brisk greens and the putts started to drop. Some really good golf despite the fact very few of us had played much in the previous month with the usual winter excuses applying! A close competition today and in 3rd place Kenneth and Ken with 35 points, Jan and Mick runners up on 36 and due to their better back nine also on 36 was Barbara and Ronnie.
Day Two San Lorenzo – We had five trios today in absolutely stunning weather, around without doubt one of my top ten courses, San Lorenzo. The waltzing matilda format of one score on the first, two on the second and three on the third to count and then repeat was our competition format for today. It is a fun game, although when all three players are to count on a tougher hole, as seemed to befall us on San Lorenzo, the smiles can be a little forced! As usual a very close finish and with an excellent 68 points, Ronnie, Trish and Ken were pipped by one point by Barbara, David and Bob. Everyone looking forward to returning on Wednesday for another crack at this gem.
Day Three Vale do Lobo, Royal Course – We had teams of four today and sadly my Jennie was still under the weather and confined to barracks for the day. The Royal course has an interesting mix of holes and incorporates the most photographed hole in Europe on the 16th. The scoring all round was terrific to match the golf course’s condition. So on a scintillating 86 points, Richard, Rosemary, Trish and Ronnie in a two from four event. On 88 points Bob, Kenneth, Les and myself with everyone contributing and Bob excelling with three 2s on their challenging par 3s including the 16th with an amazing 3 wood to 6feet. However, it still was not enough as Mike, Mick, Jean and Barbara amassed 89 points with a very even spread of contribution amongst the quartet. A brilliant day finished off with a swift drink on their lovely patio before everyone went back to get ready for our Great Gatsby themed New Year Event at the hotel.
A really fun night and the Dona Filipa put themselves out to make the Great Gatsby theme come alive. This began with a vintage car in the lobby (not sure how it got in there), then great attention to detail with decorations and the staff all turned out superbly. There was live music, a spot of pre dinner acrobatics, followed by an excellent NY dinner and the drink it is fair to say was flowing. A really impressive firework display at midnight saw us ll into 2018 in style.
Day Four – the day off had a mixture of lunches out, walking, shopping, sleeping or sun appreciation.
Day Five – as we returned to Pineros Altos and played the excellent Pines and Corks combination of 9 holes. The weather continued to be picture book perfect and after hitting some balls on their range, we looked to take our games to the course. We had teams of four and best two stableford scores to count. There was some super golf all round, two shots in particular stuck out on the 1st of the Corks where Richard and Kenneth had 170 plus yards off a hanging lie and both proceeded to pop their shots inside 10ft. However, the day belonged to the quartet of Ronnie, Jennie, Mick and Bob with a solid 82 points.
Day Six – The bad news it was our last day, however the good news was the weather was picture book perfect for our final game at San Lorenzo. We had five teams of three and the group opted for best two of three to count as the format for the day. I was keen on the more namby pamby one of three to count but was out voted! The trio of Jean, Jan and Bob (which sounds like a sixties folk group) notched up 75 points which in this format I have say was very good. We also had a first on a DSG trip where lovely Liz decided not to waste her New Years Eve feather boa and wore it to golf. I definitely helped her “feather” a few shots in and didn’t “restrict her” swing!
So a great week came to a close and we had been blessed with amazing weather, super golf, great New Year celebrations, plenty of laughs, great company and some nice food. A terrific way to begin 2018 and my New Year resolution is to carry on in the same vein for the rest of the year!
Happy New Year everyone.
