Day one of our golf tour opened with an amazing salvo of shots in the first few holes. On the 2nd newcomer Paul Warwick conjured up a terrific Seve like 9 iron over trees and rocks into the heart of the green. On the 3rd, with as many holes just sensational views over the harbour, fellow newcomer Paul O’Brart came within two inches of a hole in one. We didn’t have long to wait for an actual one as DSG regular David Hirst lofted a beautiful hybrid into the hole.
On the par 3 fifth we were egging his lovely wife Ronnie on, to contribute to the Hirst hole in one there and she lipped out! A good team comp of waltzing matilda with a close finish 66 to 65 saw the two Paul’s and Ronnie edging out Dougie, Rae and David.
Day two we headed up hill to Santo de Sierra, home of the Madeira Open, where we were blessed with terrific weather and the views were just jaw dropping. There can’t be many more scenic places in the world to play than here. Format today was best two scores from the three players. Scoring over the first nine was fairly even and then on the back nine Barbara put what can only be described as a bit of a spurt on and teamed with the steady eddy pairing of David and Ronnie, she accumulated 24 points on her own and the team romped to victory by 10 points. A super day rounded off with a great meal in the excellent “Beef and Wines” restaurant, which did exactly what it said in the title!
Day three a day off on the beautiful island the the team got up to a mixture of exploring, wine appreciation and shopping. We met up for an excellent local style Piri Piri and fish platter in the evening.
Day four our boat trip out to Porto Santo and the Seve Ballesteros designed course. The feel of the course was like a links and I imagined there were memories of P where the great man grew up by the sea. There was a breeze that certainly made us concentrate and we had a great two out of three team competition. Paul O, Ronnie and Rae came out comfortable winners and also sped around the course leaving us in their wake.
Day five back to Santo de Serra and played the course as set up for the Madeira Open and it seemed like quite a few pin positions were like it too! Blessed again with terrific weather this venue must have some of the best views of any course in Europe. The group fancied and individual competition today and with some super golf all round, Dougie emerged the ultimate winner of the day. There was a fun ending when I holed in one on the the 17th making it a 20% strike rate of our group for holes in one for the week. Our super hosts treated us first to some bubbly to celebrate with and then a spot of Madeira wine to go with our Madeira cake. In the evening we went to experience some local dancing and some of the group also joined in. We finished up at the aptly named Hole in One pub to discuss our moves on and off the golf course.
Last day was another crystal clear day with an interesting breeze to keep an edge to the play. Sadly no hole in ones today but some excellent golf all round and Dougie just edging out John by a point for the individual honours of the day. Our last evening and we went back to the “Beef and Wines” restaurant for dinner and prizes.
