Lisbon Golf and Cuisine, 9-16 May 2015

Our second visit to this lovely area for golf and cuisine, 50 minutes north of Lisbon was again much enjoyed. Staying in the Silva Coast Hotel in the town of Caldas da Rainha one feels in real Portugal. The town is about 20 minutes inland close to the fascinating walled Roman town of Obidos. Here you can walk through the narrow streets, reminiscent of old Cornish seaside villages, visit the castle and walk along the castle walls that enclose the town.

DSG_Lisbon_1We visited Obidos for two of our evening dinners but without doubt the two favourite restaurants were Dom Jose, in the village of Bombarral and Sabores in Caldas da Rainha.

Dom Jose is a family run restaurant serving typical Portuguese fare of the highest quality and yet you feel like a welcome guest in the family home. Simply delightful and an absolute must if you are ever in the area. You will be guaranteed an excellent meal and looked after by Nelson, his sister, Mum and Dad in the most understated hospitable way.

On our last visit in October we ate at Saboras 3 times and did so again this time. A short walk from the hotel this Italian restaurant is superb. We had a beautiful meal included in our package on Sunday and went for a simple mid week pizza, again excellent. The restaurant was celebrating its 20th birthday on Friday night, our last, with a wine tasting dinner and fortunately we were able to join those celebrations and enjoy the best wine from the region complementing more delicious food. Norbert, the owner and host is the ultimate professional and his staff have learned from him well. A fitting finale to our week.  Like Dom Jose it is a must visit when nearby.

Mid week we took an excursion to Peniche for lunch at Nau Dos Corvos Restaurant perched on the cliff tops. Fabulous fish and views to match!

Our golf took place at Royal Obidos and the established Praia del Ray Golf & Beach Resort. The Royal Obidos course was Seve’s last design and certainly, in my opinion, one of his best. A new course maturing quickly and in great condition. Praia del Ray, well established, is a mixture of tree lined golf opening out into true links golf on the back nine with stunning views across the beach and Atlantic Ocean before winding its way back into the trees to finish.

This holiday is about food and friendly golf, however, there is not much point in playing for nothing, so, having played a couple of warm up team events, one on each course, we played a mixed four-ball at Royal Obidos where Vanessa and Arnold were worthy winners with 40 pts.

Following our rest day from golf, although not eating & drinking, a best two from three team event saw Evelyn, Patrick & Vanessa lead the way with 73 pts on a fine but breezy day for our final round at Royal Obidos.

Even I would admit we contended with more than a stiff breeze for our last day Individual Stableford at Praia Del Ray. Beautiful blue sky’s, Atlantic waves rolling in towards the links holes and if the golf was testing, so what, the views were magnificent! Evelyn was the only person to break the 30 point barrier with a very good 31 and Val runner up with husband Vic leading Gent.

With one or two minor tweaks to the programme we will be back next year.

I hope you can join us for a taste of real Portugal in 2016.
