Gran Canaria Golf Week 22 April 2017

Our first Tour to Gran Canaria certainly won’t be the last! While it is a very large hotel, the Lopesan Meloneras Hotel ticked all the boxes and its location by the sea front and yet convenient for good shopping and restaurants of which we found several excellent ones, is ideal. A huge infinity pool complimented by several smaller ones are situated in the extensive gardens and varied nightly entertainment on the terraces ensured a vibrant atmosphere throughout.

The par 3 eighth hole at Anfi.

The Golf is excellent too! We commenced the tour at the new course of Anfi, carved from the Volcanic Rock, I am sure it will become a very enjoyable addition to the Islands golf Industry. Val’s golden spell of five three pointers in a row from the 5th to 9th, followed by a 4 pointer on the 10th! sealed a first day victory for her, Rae and myself on 78pts

Meloneras Golf Course proved to be my favourite course of the week. The first 9 holes lined by palm trees and the second 9 playing down towards and then along the cliff tops, it is a fine and fair challenge. Rosemary, Pat and Colin were the second day victors with 74pts.

In contrast to the first two days hilly terrain, Maspalomas was a flat palm tree lined course, very enjoyable and we all agreed would make an ideal first day course. Tony, Vic and Richard with another 74pts were winners today.

Following a day of relaxation away from the golf courses we returned to the hills with a vengeance on Thursday to play Salobre New course. The location is stunning, but in my view a poor, tricked up design where they are having to put the men’s tees way forward, sometimes on the ladies tees, to make it playable. As you will gather, not one I will rush back to! Liz, Rosemary and Richard won the team event here with a fine 82pts. Tony beating Rosemary on the back nine to be our individual winner and Vic in third place with a better back nine than Richard.

Tony, winner of the individual competition at Salobri New.

In contrast, our final days play on the resorts older course, Solobre Old, was most enjoyable. While, as already mentioned I have put Melonares at the top of my list, this course, Anfi and indeed Maspalomas, are a lovely selection of holiday courses. Rosemary, (obviously a team leader), Tony and Rae took the days honours on 66.

Iain is busy finding a spot in my diary for a return in 2018, which I highly recommend!

Hope to see you soon.
