ONE OF THE BEST!
Our first visit to Gran Canaria in May of 2017 left a very good impression and with a slight tweak or two this return visit proved most popular with those taking part. How can we ever find the perfect balance for everyone, but this certainly comes close.
While very large, the Lopesan Costa Melanoras Hotel, met all our expectations and although busy, gives a sense of space and friendliness. Expansive gardens, five or six separate pools and sunbathing areas with their own poolside cafes are only a stones throw from the beach and the hotel provides good quality outdoor entertainment each evening. We took the Gourmet package enabling us to eat in 3 different a la carte restaurants during the week and an extensive breakfast was provided each morning. A walk through the gardens to the beach side entrance and one can stroll along the promenade a good distance in both directions, or exit through the reception area, down the drive, and one is in the extensive shopping centre.
The golf is good too. Melonares is an excellent resort course. Cleverly designed with the front nine a good variety of holes, undulating, but easily walkable, through palm trees and a back nine, again a fine selection of holes with glorious sea views, playing out towards and then along the cliff top before heading back towards the clubhouse for the final two. Three rounds here, one on Maspalomas, a flatter more forgiving course and a day in the hills at Anfi Tauro. Carved from the rocks, this modern design is excellent. A mix of desert and mountain golf, apart from the odd hole, much more room than first appears, although many second shots may be played from the desert waste areas, but without doubt the undulating greens can at times make one feel a little foolish. Basically, keep the ball below the hole approaching the greens and find the pace on them…… oh, if it were only that easy!!
As has become a popular format, we ran a daily team event in conjunction with an individual stableford league over four rounds, and a 4 BBB to conclude the week.
A team event the first day on a breezy Melonares saw Maggie, Julian and Ivan beat two 73’s with a sound 75. Maggie again leading Don and Richard to a one shot team victory over the same test on day two. Meanwhile, Don led the individual score that day with 34, while Steve slipped into joint first place with Rosemary in the individual event. Richard, along with Jeff, Steve and Ivan, who produced the best individual score, won the team event at Maspalomas and moved to joint leader with Don for individual honors. With all to play for entering the fourth round of the individual at the tricky Anfi Tauro, Richard fell away, while Alan and Don produced the best scores of the day and with Gurdip easily won the team event. Don secured the individual victory, while with another steady round Rosemary climbed into second place.
Our final day four-ball better ball back at Melonares where we teamed top with bottom from the individual league, saw some close results with two 36’s, two 37’s. Julian & Don R/up by way of best back 9 from Lesley and Ivan. However, Steve and Alan blew the whole field away scoring a magnificent 44 points.
This event will certainly be run again next year, and comes highly recommended.
