France / Chateaux des Vigiers, Dordogne – Sept 2013

We recently completed our first French Tour 21-28 September and a great success it was to. My thanks go to Bridget (who has nagged me for several years to try the area) for her input into selecting Chateaux des Vigiers and particularly our winery visit, lunch and wine tasting at Chateaux Gattigue.

Over the years I have experienced many wine tours, tastings, lunches etc., mainly in South Africa and several in Italy, as had most members of the party. We unanimously agreed that Caroline Feely’s great passion and knowledge gave us, by far, the best experience ever. South African born, she has written a book – Grape Expectations – of how her and her husband realised a dream of owning their very own wine estate. As yet I have not had time to read my signed copy, but having listened to her brief introduction and listening to her incredibly¬† passionate presentation I know it will make a very worthwhile read. I unhesitatingly recommend a visit, by appointment, if you are ever in the area just 15 mins from Bergerac. www.FrenchWineAdventures.com. It will certainly be included in our future tours of that region.

Anyway, back to our Chateaux and golf. Superbly appointed, spacious rooms overlooking the 27 hole golf course, played in three loops of nine holes, the Vines, Valley and Lake, speak for themselves. Friendly holiday golf from the tee but with a bite when you get to the green. Very good putting surfaces with subtle slopes and of a speed that caught the attention. I am always preaching pace, pace, pace, I think some of the group finally realised why!!

There are two restaurants at Chateaux des Vigiers, the more casual Brasserie at the golf club and the more formal Gastronomic in the Chateaux itself. Attentive service, fine French food and wines, made for a perfect end to our days of golf played under a blue sky in 25 degrees every day!

Ali MacDonald won the 36 hole stableford by 2 points from David Hirst. Ronnie Hirst and yours truly won the first day 4BBB on the back nine with 38 pts and Ali partnering Neville Hill finished off the week winning the final day 4BBB with an excellent 42 pts.

More French adventures will follow in 2014, make sure you are signed up for our newsletter to receive the information as soon as it is released.
