The Tivoli Marina Hotel is not only high on quality, but ideally located for the restaurants and shops on the Marina front, and indeed all five courses are within a very short distance of the hotel.
With all of our events, we do our utmost to ensure that we have good quality accommodation an exciting and interesting golf courses to play. But we also put a huge emphasis on the social side of the tour and aim to ensure that everyone feels ‘part of the family’. We dine, drink, smile and laugh together and collectively enjoy what should be a fine social week of golf.
As with last year, we have two New Year tours, with David hosting the alternative week at the Dona Filipa Resort.
THE TIVOLI MARINA HOTEL, VILAMOURA
With the famous Marina on one side and its own beach on the other, excellent rooms and facilities, the Tivoli Marina Hotel provides the perfect base for the New Year Golf Tour. The restaurants, bars and shops of the Marina are a stroll away, and the hotel itself provides a wonderful range of leisure facilities, including the Angsana Spa, which is located in the gardens of the hotel. The hotel also hosts a number of restaurants and bars, which are all worthy alternatives to dining out in the evenings.
THE GOLF COURSES
Dom Pedro Golf Club – Millennium
Boasting a unique position within the Vilamoura portfolio, it is often asserted that the creation of the Millennium course was pivotal in cementing the status of the Algarve as one of Europe’s most-visited and best-loved for golf. Opened in the year 2000 and comprising nine brand new holes and a refurbished inward half, which had previously formed part of the original 27-hole Laguna course, this is a more open course that its neighbours, although holes 3 to 7 wind between pine trees. The course is a super compliment to the other courses in Vilamoura that we will be playing.
Dom Pedro Golf Club – Victoria
At the time of creation, the Victoria course was hailed as the most ambitious golf project Portugal had ever witnessed. Designed by true golfing legend, Arnold Palmer, there is absolutely no doubt that it has lived up to that lofty billing. Covering some 90 hectares, the venue encompasses one of the most complete golf complexes in Europe and features an exceptional driving range and a putting green of some 2,500 m2. All of this has made it the obvious venue of choice for many of the top international tournaments to visit Portugal in recent times. Indeed, it has served as the host venue to the Portugal Masters on every occasion since 2007, while the World Cup Championship was staged here in 2005. The Victoria course quickly became one of the best golf courses in Portugal, with a layout that presents a challenge even for the most seasoned players.
Quinta do Lago Golf Club – South Course
The Quinta do Lago South course is the crown jewel of Quinta do Lago. Designed in 1974 by William Mitchell, who introduced American-standard greens, tees and bunkers to the Algarve. Soon the course gained a prestigious reputation and became a flagship in the European Tour Course. A favourite among European tour players, the 6,500 metre par 72 course is set among umbrella pines, lakes and wild flowers, overlooking the serene Ria Formosa National Park. The South course has hosted the Portuguese Open eight times, including Colin Montgomerie’s win in 1989. Having won 24 under par, he finished 11 strokes ahead and broke the world record with a round of 63.
Quinta da Lago – North Course
The North Course was totally redesigned in 2014, by the renowned architect Beau Welling, in conjunction with former European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley. The new layout has been built to the highest specifications, with an investment of €9million. All the greens, tees, bunkers, irrigation and drainage systems and buggy paths have been re-built using innovative technology. Four sets of tees have been introduced on each hole to accommodate players of all levels. Golfers are challenged by a combination of undulating greens, well-positioned bunkers and water hazards. A low-cut Bermuda grass approach has been introduced around greens to create recovery shot options, therefore encouraging all levels of play. Through the introduction of seasonal rough grass and the planting of specimen trees, the aesthetics and environmental impact of the par-72 course has significantly improved.
Quinta da Lago – Laranjal Course
The Quinta do Lago’s Laranjal course is one of the finest courses in the Algarve and a favourite with clients in recent years. The course, which was originally an orange grove, is a sanctuary for fine golf. The narrow fairways and the well defined greens require concentration and accuracy to navigate what is a testing course laid out on a rolling and distinctive terrain. It is a par 72, 6,480 metres long, with five par 5s, eight par 4s and five par 3s, all set amongst umbrella pines, cork-oaks and orange trees, with a natural water course and five beautiful lakes.
