• Overview

Our accommodation is the 4 Star Vila Gale Ampalius Hotel, located close to the Marina in Vilamoura. With sea-view rooms and easy access to the shops and restaurants of Vilamoura, the hotel provides the ideal base for our New Year week. It is not just the golf that makes this week special however; it is the camaraderie within the group. Both the Christmas and New Year weeks are social weeks, where we combine great golf, good hotels with a wonderful social environment for all. Whether you are meeting up with old friends, or taking the opportunities to meet new like minded people, we will do everything that we can to ensure that this week and the Christmas week before, bring smiles, laughter and happy long lasting memories.

For New Year Eve, we will book a good Restaurant on the Marina and bring in the New Year in fine style.

Throughout the tour, there will also be the opportunity for some informal golf lessons. Simply let me know if you would like some tuition and if so, clinics will be arranged accordingly.

The 4 Star Vila Gale Ampalius hotel has become our traditional accommodation venue for the New Year tour week.  As with previous years we have booked superior sea view rooms.  With the plethora of shops and restaurants close to the hotel, we have the perfect base for our New Year week in the Algarve.  The hotel also has an excellent outdoor pool, a health club, and a tennis court and provides very good access to all of the golf courses.

The Pinhal Course was the second golf course built in Vilamoura and inaugurated in 1976, having originally been designed by Frank Pennink, the architect of the nearby Oceanico Old Course.  Several refinements were incorporated over the years, the most significant one by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1985. The course is typified by rolling parkland terrain covered with numerous umbrella and Atlantic pines that line many of the fairways and a few even stand out on fairways or near greens.  Ponds and a stream come into play on five holes but are not serious threats to above-average golfers. To keep up with modern technical advances in clubs and balls, several holes have recently been lengthened and the PAR 72 course now measures 6353m off the white tee markers.

This conventional PAR 72 Millenium course opened in the year 2000, although the original back nine was formerly part of the 27-hole Laguna Course. Refurbishment to the existing nine holes commenced in May 1999 and included the complete rebuilding of the tees, greens and bunkers, particularly for holes 8 and 9, the only ones on this loop with water hazards, with the aim to simplify the strategy of the course to make it more golfer-friendly.  The course is particularly open, although some holes (the 3rd to the 7th) wind between pine trees and are similar to the neighbouring fairways of the Oceanico Old Course and Oceanico Pinhal. In this more wooded area, the fairways are narrower and require greater accuracy – while the rest of the course has a clear landscape enriched by lakes at the 4th, 17th and 18th holes. The arrival of the Oceanico Millennium course made Vilamoura one of the main, if not the main, European golf destinations.

Opened in 1974, Quinta do Lago South has hosted the ‘Portuguese Open Championship’ eight times, together with many other important professional and amateur championships. The course is set in a natural setting surrounded by umbrella pines, lakes and wild vegetation, with the stunning Ria Formosa nature reserve as the backdrop.  Each hole has generous landing areas off the tees and well-defined routes through the woodland and pine setting.

The Quinta do Lago’s Laranjal course is one of the finest courses in the Algarve and a favourite with clients in recent years.  The course, which was originally an orange grove, is a sanctuary for fine golf.  The narrow fairways and the well defined greens require concentration and accuracy to navigate what is a testing course laid out on a rolling and distinctive terrain. It is a par 72, 6,480 metres long, with five par 5s, eight par 4s and five par 3s, all set amongst umbrella pines, cork-oaks and orange trees, with a natural water course and five beautiful lakes.

The Oceanico Old Course is often described as the Grande Dame of the Algarve courses.  The course is one of the oldest in the Algarve and is renowned all over the golfing world.  Although opened in 1969, the course was completely renovated and modernised in 1997, although no major changes were made to the magnificent layout.  ‘Golf Digest’ has rated the Old Course amongst the world’s top 100.  The fairways run through surrounding pine trees and present an extra challenge to our game.  The course visually is a very attractive course with a great variety of holes, perfectly maintained due in part to a sophisticated irrigation system.  The Par 3 holes in particular are quite stunning and all quite different and they represent the toughest challenge on the course.  They all require careful selection of irons and near perfect ball control and the greens are small especially on the shorter holes, where there is simply no margin for error.
