    Suwan Golf & Country Club
The Suwan Golf & Country Club is in the countryside west of Bangkok. The drive from Bangkok goes through several rural villages that add to the course’s uniqueness. Surrounding fruit orchards, rice fields, palm trees, and lotus ponds gives the Club a tropical-Thai character which is always appreciated by visitors.
The course has already won several best in Asia awards despite being opened only a few years. In 2009 and again in 2010 the Asian Tour International tournament was held at Suwan and then in 2011, the OneAsia circuit selected Suwan as the venue for the prestigious Thailand Open. The golf course’s hilly and challenging layout makes every hole have its own unique character. Fairways give many uneven lies and many of the greens are well bunkered. More than most other Thailand golf courses there are many holes with significant elevation changes where level fairways  play up to built-up and well-guarded greens. There’s plenty of movement requiring more than just a cursory read of the line to be successful at putting.
Playing at over 7100 yards water or out-ofbounds comes come in to play on most holes, putting shot making accuracy at a premium. The appealing attributes require golf course strategy on nearly every hole. Suwan is not a golf course where merely hitting it down the middle on the tee shot is always the correct way to play. There are doglegs that tempt golfers to cut the corners and for those who do there are big rewards, but severe penalties for the failed attempt. The bunkering was more than just of the penal variety. At times, like many of the streams or ponds found on the course, the sand punishes the overzealous player, at other times, is serves to deceive the golfer.

    Exploring the City of Angels
Bangkok is a city that truly has something for everyone; a vibrant energy coursing through the streets that can provide excitement and intrigue at every corner. Edging the River of Kings, Anantara Bangkok Riverside Resort & Spa is just moments away from some of the capital’s most iconic riverside attractions, including the Grand Palace, Temple of Dawn and age old life of the canal maze. The resort’s complimentary shuttle boat service transports guests to the Asiatique lifestyle complex located opposite, and also to Saphan Taksin sky train station which connects to the whole city, meaning that wider cultural highlights, as well as
cosmopolitan shopping, dining and entertainment areas, are all within easy reach. Our tour today will take us to the Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew, a long tailed boat ride along the waterways of Bangkok and a City sight-seeing tour along Ratchadumnoen Road (The Royal’s Way). Once the tour is over, it is highly recommended that we explore the plethora of luxury shopping malls, or indeed the
street markets that abound the City.

The Alpine Golf & Sports Club
The Alpine Golf & Sports Club is one of Thailand’s top rated courses, and one of the best in Asia. The layout was the venue for the 2000 Johnnie Walker Classic PGA tournament won by Tiger Woods and again hosted the same event in 2004. In addition to the superb layout, the course is extremely well maintained and features lightning fast greens and undulating fairways. Large stately trees, bushes and shrubs flourish within the undulating parkland layout. In fact, it is hard to imagine that Alpine was originally created from flat rice paddy fields. The changing elevations are more characteristic of courses in Chiang Mai, Hua Hin or Phuket, instead of Bangkok.
In addition to significant elevation changes and a wonderfully rolling undulating design, water is also much in evidence, along with beach-style bunkers, which most notably protect the front of the par-3 3rd and 12th holes. This is not a Bangkok
golf course for the faint-heated. Some of the drives require straight shots to avoid winding up in the jungle lining many of the holes. Finding the often water-protected greens is also no mean achievement. The 7th and 11th holes for example, are both played to what in essence are island greens, connected to each other by a small sliver of land. With these relatively small putting surfaces to aim at, one is left mesmerized to discover that Tiger Woods actually eagled the 555-yard par- 5 7th on his way to winning the 2000 Johnnie Walker Classic. Alpine is clearly a layout that will test the best, but also one that is full of wonderfully picturesque holes and lots of lush vegetation.

    Homeward bound
So our Asia tour draws to a close. From the beaches and jungles of Langkawi to the rich cultural experience of Cambodia, to the glitz and glamour of Pattaya and finally to the mesmeric charm of Bangkok, an experience that I hope will live long in the memory. We shall return in 2015 and head back to an old favourite, Hainan Island
    in China.
