• Overview

Fondly known as the ‘place where the sun rises,’ the Mpumulanga Province, formerly the Eastern Transvaal, is considered to be one of the most geographically diverse and unbelievably beautiful regions in South Africa. Mpumalanga lies in the east of South Africa, north of KwaZulu-Natal and bordering Swaziland and Mozambique. In the northeast, the land rises towards mountain peaks and then terminates in an immense escarpment. In some places, this escarpment plunges hundreds of metres down to the low-lying area known as the Lowveld.  People are drawn to Mpumalanga by the magnificent scenery, by the fauna and flora and by the saga of the 1870s gold rush era and a wealth of fascinating tribal legends.  Mountains, panoramic passes, valleys, rivers, waterfalls and forests characterise the landscape. This is also big game country, the setting for dozens of sanctuaries teeming with wildlife and birds.  We will of course visit the world’s most famous game reserve, the Kruger National Park.  The golf courses are very good too and we will play four rounds during the week.  Steeped in the history of pioneers, hunters and fortune seekers, Mpumalanga offers something for everyone.

Saturday 21st February – Welcome to Mpumulanga, or in old money, the Eastern Transvaal

Having arrived at the Kruger Mpumulanga International Airport (KMIA) in Nelspruit, we will be transferred to the Perry’s Bridge Hollow Hotel in Hazyview, an hours drive away.  The Perry’s Bridge Hollow Boutique Hotel is set in beautiful grounds in a colonial-style Lifestyle Centre, which is called the Perry’s Bridge Trading Post.  The hotel is just minutes from Kruger National Park and close to some of the most iconic locations in the region, such as the Blyde River Canyon, Pilgrim’s Rest, God’s Window and Bourke’s Luck Potholes.  A super location for what should be an exceptional week.

Sunday 22nd February – Sabi River Golf Club

Our first round in Mpumulanga takes us to the Sabi River Golf Club.  The course is set in a beautiful surrounding on the verge of an escarpment.  One of the most prominent features of the Sabi River golf course are the hippos and crocodiles that inhabit the main dam next to the 14th and 15th holes.  Perhaps it is best to leave any balls that happened to land in the water, where they are!  Having returned to the hotel, we will be treated to a ‘River Evening Feast.’  This is a cultural evening located at the Hippo Hollow Country Estate.   We will meet the Chief of the local Tribe, watch traditional Shangaan dancing, even try it ourselves, whilst enjoying some excellent local cuisine.

Monday 23rd February – White River Golf Club

Our second round of the week takes us to the White River Golf Course.  The old 9-hole golf course has been completely revamped into a new and exciting 18-hole layout.  Gary Player and Reg Taylor played a part in the design and indeed two of the par-fives,  hole 7 and hole 11, are comparable to the Augusta National in their beauty, challenge and abundance of water.   The course meanders gently through a valley, and forest and river frontages are all part of the delightful vistas to be experienced here. The course follows the natural undulations of the valley and regularly criss-crosses the White River which provides memorable challenges, both alongside fairways and fronting some of the greens.

Tuesday 24th February – Game Viewing

Being located by the Kruger National Park, it is only right that we enjoy at least a day in the world’s most famous game reserve.  The day will start with an hour’s interaction with elephants at the Elephant Whispers camp.  We will touch, feed and learn about the elephants.  Elephant Whispers is a haven for six rescued African elephants ranging in age from 11 to 28 years, and is located on the banks of the Sabi River.  Dedicated to securing the future of the African Elephant, Elephant Whispers will welcome us to share in the excitement of close encounters with these magnificent creatures.  We will experience the privilege of little Lindiwe’s compassionate nature, we will witness Medwa’s remarkable memory and we will enjoy the thrill of interacting with the impressive six ton Tembo.  From the Elephant Whispers Camp, we will move into the Kruger Park for a five hour open vehicle safari.  With an experienced field guide in specially modified safari vehicles, we will enjoy some spectacular game viewing.  We have experienced the game reserves of the Eastern Cape on many occasions, but never the Kruger National Park; it should be a day to remember.

Wednesday 25th February – Nelspruit Golf Club

We play the highlight of the golfing week today, Nelspruit Golf Club, which is ranked the 47th best course in South Africa.   Originally designed by Bob Grimsdell, Nelspruit Golf Club underwent a major overhaul in 1998, with Peter Matkovich leading the re-design project.  The course is considered a ‘must-play’ course in the Lowveld region.  Uniquely there are no fairway bunkers on any of the holes; instead trees have been used to really test accuracy off the tee.  Nelspruit is also famous for hosting the annual Jock of the Bushveld event, considered the biggest amateur tournament of its kind in the world.  Started in 1968, it has grown to the extent where some 800 competitors play more than 2,000 rounds during a week in May.

Thursday 26th February – Full Day Panorama Tour

Not only is Mpumulanga home to the Kruger National Park, but the region is also famous for its extraordinary landscape and environment, and today we will experience this at first hand.  We will firstly visit the village of Graskop and the Lisbon and Berlin waterfalls.  We will then head to Gods Window and enjoy the amazing views of the Lowveld.  We will move onto the quaint and historic town of Pilgrim’s Rest and enjoy lunch at the famous Harries Pancakes.  After lunch we will explore the rock formations of Bourke’s Luck Potholes and then to conclude the day we will visit the legendary Blyde River Canyon, the third largest canyon and the greenest in the world.

Friday 27th February – Sabie River Golf Club

Our South African golfing experience draws to a close at the Sabie River Golf Course.  The course was originally built 57 years ago by the local farmers for their own use as a nine hole golf course.  In 1992 it was redesigned by Golf Data and is today a most enjoyable 18 hole golf course. Trees and water both play important roles as hazards on this course. At least 14 holes have water hazards and there are five dams and they all play a role.  In the evening we will find a restaurant and reflect on the past three weeks, with what we hope will be many fantastic shared experiences.
