• Overview

For over a decade we have travelled annually to South Africa, and for the February 2015 tour, we revisit the wonderful regions of the Winelands, taking in Cape Town and the Garden Route, and we then head north to Mpumalanga to explore a new region on the western fringe of the Kruger National Park.  If you want stunning scenery, magnificent food, sublime wine, game experiences that will live with you forever, as well of course the opportunity to play some of South Africa’s finest golf courses, then this tour has it all.  We present you with a tour that gives you the opportunity to meet with old friends, make new ones and together for us all to experience the utter joy that is South Africa.

As with recent tours, we are providing three, one week segments, in order that you can book either all three weeks,  or any variation that you choose.  If you wish to book your place(s) on the tour, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Saturday 7th February – Welcome to South Africa

As you drive out of the airport, off to the right is the sillouette of Table Mountain; immediately you smile!  We will head slightly inland though to the charming Cape Dutch town of Stellenbosch, in the heart of the South African Winelands.  Stellenbosch is the largest of the three Winelands towns, Paarl and Franschhoek being the other two.  Famous for its wine estates and Cape Dutch architecture, Stellenbosch is a vibrant, thriving town and the perfect location for our first week in South Africa.   Our hotel for the week is the Batavia Boutique Hotel, which worked so well for clients in November 2013.  The hotel presents itself as a grand classical 19th century guest house, albeit with all modern facilities and is ideally located in the heart of the town.  We are a stroll away from wonderful restaurants, wine bars and shops.

Sunday 8th February– Cape Town Tour

For the first full day of the tour, we will explore one of the most extraordinary cities in the world, Cape Town.  We will travel into the city and assuming that the ‘table cloth’ is not present we will ascend Table Mountain and experience what is surely one of the most amazing 360 degree panoramas in the world.  We will then drive to Hout Bay, travel along the awe inspiring Chapman’s Peak, visit the penguins at Boulders Beach and then travel on to Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope.  If time allows we will visit Fishoek and Nordhoek and perhaps even Kirstenbosch Botantical Gardens.  If you have any particular experiences that you would like us to include during the day, please let us know in advance and we will do all that we can to adapt the day accordingly.

Monday 9th February – Stellenbosch Golf Club

We commence our South African golf experience with a round at Stellenbosch Golf Club itself.  The Championship course has hosted many prestigious tournaments in the past, amongst them the South African Open and the South African Masters.  Indeed the 1999 South African Open at Stellenbosch Golf Club proved to be one of the toughest Opens in the last decade or so.  It is a super course and closely located to the hotel.  With the tee-times commencing at 8:45am, we will also have the afternoon at leisure to explore the town and embrace its immense charm.

Tuesday 10th February – De Zalze Golf Club

Our second round is at the ever popular De Zalze Golf Club, which is situated within the De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate.  The course was designed by Peter Matkovich, who also designed Leopard Rock, Arabella and Pinnacle Point amongst others, and who has made the most of the stunning setting and created a course that places a premium on accuracy.  The course has an excellent mix of parkland holes, with its main challenges presented in the form of the water features on several holes, as well as the oak tree lined Blaauwklippen River, which winds its way through the golf estate and comes into play at various intervals.  Another magnificent golf course, set in a truly inspiring setting.  We tee off from 8:30am, which again presents the opportunity to spend time in Stellenbosch, eating, drinking, shopping and exploring. It is very difficult to become bored with Stellenbosch!

Wednesday 11th February – Winelands Sightseeing Day

A day away from the fairways, but in amongst the vines!  The Winelands region is a magical mix of vineyards, mountains, valleys and three wonderfully charismatic towns.  Stellenbosch we will already be getting to know, but we will also visit Paarl and Franschhoek, both of which have their own unique individual character.  During the day we will also endeavour to come off the tourist trail and experience some of the smaller wine estates.  As with the sightseeing in Cape Town, if there are any South African wines that you have a certain liking for, do let us know beforehand and we will do all that we can to include a visit to their wine estate.

Thursday 12th February – Pearl Valley Golf Club

We will take on one of the great courses in South Africa today, the Jack Nicklaus Pearl Valley Golf Club, host to the South African Open and ranked the fifth best golf course in South Africa in the 2010/2011 Golf Digest rankings.  The course is one of the most visually spectacular golf courses in the country and arguably the world.  Every hole is played against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains surrounding the estate and all are challenging due to the strategically set bunkers and fast greens. All par 3’s and par 5’s play in different directions, ensuring that the same conditions are seldom experienced during a round.  The 13th hole, par 3, is the ‘signature’ hole of the course. The water cuts from the right and a greenside bunker awaits the cautious tee shot. This hole tests both our ball striking and our nerve.  Hole 4 is also challenging, with no room for error as we need to cross the creek three times en-route to the green.  This par 5 is listed as one of the best par 5’s in South Africa – a real ‘risk and reward’ classic!   We tee-off just after 9:00am, which presents the opportunity for a further visit to Franschhoek if required, which is located very close by.

Friday 13th February – Clovelly Golf Club

We head into Cape Town for our final round in the Western Cape and play what has been a great favourite over the years, Clovelly Golf Club.  Clovelly is one of southern Africa’s most picturesque and challenging courses and boasts undulating fairways, magnificent landscaping and features natural sand dunes that abound the course, as well as many natural water features.  Clovelly really is one of the most enjoyable courses in the Cape and a fitting finale to our golf in the Western Cape.

Saturday 14th February – Departures and onward to the Garden Route

After breakfast, we check out of the hotel, say farewell to the Winelands and head to the pearl of the Garden Route, Knysna.  The journey will be by road, although if you would prefer to fly from Cape Town to George, we can make these arrangements for you.
