• Overview

The 2015 South Africa Tour was a success, but we have made enhancements to the logistical arrangements for this tour.  The transportation will be in luxury mini-coaches with spacious reclining seats and we have employed the services of specialist tour guides for the sightseeing days. With the dinners in the evenings we will be pre-booking restaurants each night as usual, but also encouraging clients to dine independantly if they wish, as the culinary scene in South Africa is both superb and diverse and we don’t want clients to feel that they must dine with the group all of the time.

We have also extended the tour by a week in order to give you more choice of the weeks that you may wish to attend. This should also ensure that the number of clients attending each week does not become too excessive. Ultimately these tours are about creating personal experiences that will live long in the memory and our ethos is very much about caring for you, our client, and ensuring that you feel very much at the heart of what we do.  You may of course book all four weeks, but equally please select the combination of weeks that is best for you and we will book you in accordingly.  If you wish to book for South Africa 2016, please contact us and let the countdown to a wonderful tour commence!

Saturday 6th February – Settling in to the Winelands!

We commence the 2016 South African tour in the Winelands, as has become the tradition in recent years. However, for the first time we will stay in the wonderful Winelands town of Franschhoek. Our hotel for the week is the Le Franschhoek Hotel & Spa. The hotel is situated on one of Franschhoek’s original country retreats and is in itself a luxury retreat with picture postcard views of the Franschhoek Mountains & is the perfect setting for a taste of the legendary Cape Wine Routes. All of the bedrooms reflect the contemporary styling and grace which one would expect from a 4 star hotel in the heart of the Winelands, with clean finishes, elegant furnishings and gorgeous views from every room. The understated tones of the décor in the hotel maintains just enough Cape Dutch charm to compliment the quaint pastoral aura of the surrounding vineyards. A sublime hotel for our week, in a most enchanting corner of the Western Cape.

Optional afternoon at Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate with Johan Wolmarans

For clients arriving in the morning or indeed travelling from Cape Town from the pre-tour trip, we would recommend a walk around Franschhoek, visiting some of the famous landmarks in this wonderful town. There will also be the option to sign up for an afternoon of wine tasting by Grande Provence, which will be hosted for our group by Johan Wolmarans, which will provide a rather fitting start to the week in the Winelands.

Sunday 7th February – Winelands Tour

Our first full day will be spent on wine tasting, but in a way that we have never done before. In the company of Johan Wolmarans, we will visit three wine farms which are all different in character. We will visit the La Borie Wine Farm in Paarl, which represents an old dutch style, the Fairview wine farm which is cheese and wine style and where there is the option for lunch (own account), followed by the Muratie wine farm, which is a truly fascinating wine estate. The farm itself dates back to 1685 when it was granted by Governor Simon van der Stel who was Governor of the Cape of Good Hope at the time. This makes Muratie one of the oldest estates in South Africa and along with that age comes many characters and truly fascinating stories. Our intention with the 2016 tour, with the assistance of Johan, is to provide more depth and understanding to the regions of South Africa that we are visiting, than we have ever done before.

Monday 8th February – De Zalze Golf Club

Our first round of golf on tour is at the ever popular De Zalze Golf Club, which is situated within the De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate. The course was designed by Peter Matkovich, who also designed Leopard Creek, Arabella and Pinnacle Point, amongst others, and who has made the most of the stunning setting and created a course that places a premium on accuracy. The course has an excellent mix of parkland holes, with its main challenges presented in the form of the water features on several holes, as well as the oak tree lined Blaauwklippen River, which winds its way through the Golf Estate and comes into play at various intervals. A magnificent golf course, in a truly inspiring setting.

Tuesday 9th February – Erinvale Golf Club

We make a very welcome return to one of the best courses in the Western Cape, Erinvale. The exclusive Erinvale Golf Club is nestled in the middle of the Erinvale Estate in Somerset West, at the foothills of the Helderberg and Hottentots Holland Mountains. These majestic mountains and views of the ocean make this golf course quite spectacular. This Gary Player designed course has been the host of the World Cup of Golf in 1996 and South African Airways Open Championships in 2003 and 2004. The first 9 holes are on the low, flat part of the estate and the second 9 are on high, undulating ground. This gives us two different feels, but there remains a common thread which is the standard of the superbly shaped greens which have truly consistent putting surfaces. Throughout the course there are majestic mountain backdrops, panoramic views of the surrounding hillsides planted with vine and sparkling views of the ocean from the higher vantage points. Erinvale Golf Club only allow tee-times to be booked six months in advance; hence at the time of writing the tee-times are not known. However, it is our intention to book afternoon tee-times and to book tables for dinner at Ernie Else’s ‘The Big Easy Restaurant’ in Stellenbosch’s Dorp Street. The cost of dinner is for each person’s own account.

Wednesday 10th February – The REAL Winelands Experience!

In keeping with our more in depth approach this year to the sightseeing, we are spending the day away from the tourist trails and experiencing the real Winelands. We will again be joined for the day by Johan Wolmarans and the day will concentrate in the Breede River Valley, where we will sample some amazing wines. We will visit five wine farms. Firstly, we will drive from Franschhoek to the Du Preez wine farm in Rosenville, which is a 50 minute drive. We will then progress to the Slanghoek Valley where a further four wine farms will be visited. The first is Jason’s Hill, followed by Opstal, where lunch will be taken. Whilst waiting for lunch we will be taken on a wine making tour. Please note that lunch is for each person’s own account. From Opstal we travel to the Bergsig Mountain View farm, another quite unique wine farm. We then begin to drive back towards Franschhoek but via the Ceres road to Worcester. En route we will stop at the Basberg wine farm, which has a total of 28 wines to taste. The intention is to deliver a wine tasting day that is one of the best and most unique that we will ever experience.

Thursday 11th February – Pearl Valley Golf Club

We will take on one of the great courses in South Africa today, the Jack Nicklaus Pearl Valley Golf Club, host to the South African Open and ranked the fifth best golf course in South Africa in the 2010/2011 Golf Digest rankings. The course is one of the most visually spectacular golf courses in the country and arguably the world. Every hole is played against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains surrounding the estate and all are challenging due to the strategically set bunkers and fast greens. All par 3s and par 5s play in different directions, ensuring that the same conditions are seldom experienced during a round. The 13th hole, par 3, is the ‘signature’ hole of the course. The water cuts from the right and a greenside bunker awaits the cautious tee shot. This hole tests both our ball striking and our nerve. Hole 4 is also challenging, with no room for error as we need to cross the creek three times en route to the green. This par 5 is listed as one of the best par 5s in South Africa – a real ‘risk and reward’ classic!

Friday 12th February – Paarl Boschenmeer Golf Club

For our final round in the Winelands, we play the stunning Paarl Boschenmeer golf course. The scenic course is nestled in the foothills of Paarl Rock with its distinctive Granite outcrops. The course is adjacent to the meandering Berg River and surrounded by the majestic Boland mountains. The course offers tree-lined fairways and an array of water hazards. Bunkers are cleverly positioned to add excitement and a challenge to the course. This, coupled with the large and well undulated bent grass greens, provides us with a fine challenge to draw the week to a close.
