• Overview

For many years we have taken the ‘Golf & Coaching Weeks’ to different locations across Europe, Africa and the South East Asia. One of the most popular venues in recent times has been Italy, and so we return!

    Donafugata/Parkland #15 CU
THE DONNAFUGATA GOLF RESORT & SPA, Near Regusa

The luxury five-star Donnafugata Golf Resort & Spa is a heavenly place for anyone wishing to experience an unforgettable stay in one of the most enchanting places in Sicily. The venue of the Sicilian Open 2011, the Resort lies 17 km (10 miles) from Comiso international airport and 100 km (62 miles) from Catania international airport and is just a 10 minute taxi ride from the historic centre of Ragusa. The resort offers two championship golf-courses, a Spa and fitness centre, swimming-pools and three restaurants. We will be staying in the ‘Classic Rooms’ of the hotel. With a floor area of 38 sq m and a parquet floor, the Classic rooms are located on the first floor and have comfortable balconies overlooking the countryside and the Resort’s large garden. The rooms include double bed or two single beds, Satellite TV, mini-bar, Air-conditioning, hairdryer, Safe deposit box and free Wi-Fi Internet access

    THE RESTAURANTS

On six evenings, dinner at the hotel is included within the terms of our stay, the remaining dinner being part of the Sicilian wine tasting day. The Resort has three restaurants, one for breakfast and two for dinners.

    Il Ficodindia restaurant

Here everything smells of Sicily. Breakfast is taken at the ‘Il Ficodindia’ restaurant in the form of an international buffet, with the dishes cooked in front of us. It is worth the visit if only for a pleasant coffee and a croissant, homemade by our chef, like all of the dishes.

The Club House 19th Hole restaurant

The Club House provides the ideal atmosphere in which to relax and socialise. The menu boasts fresh, local ingredients in simple, but delicious dishes, from the gourmet panini to the fresh fish. We can enjoy a traditional cocktail, a good wine or a beer while gazing at the dazzling natural backdrop. The type of cuisine are simple Mediterranean dishes, snacks with cold and hot sandwiches and mixed salads

    Il Carrubo

We will experience the typically Mediterranean specialities in the unique atmosphere of the Il Carrubo Restaurant. Entering the large, bright dining room, the windows that run around all the walls afford a fantastic view of the garden and nearby golf course. The restaurant’s kitchen provides a delicious balance between tradition and innovation. At the Carrubo we can choose between two cooking philosophies, as there are two menus, the ‘Regional’ menu and the ‘Mediterranean Gourmet’ menu. Il Carrubo’s wine cellar proposes wines that best represent the marvelous range of Sicilian wines, along with an exceptional choice of wines and spirits that covers the Italian peninsula from north to south. Robust wines like the Nero d’Avola, perfumed white wines like the Alcamo Bianco, fruity wines like the famous Moscato and the Passito di Pantelleria, are all present, and of course the audacious Marsala.

    THE GOLF COURSES

    The North Course – Parkland

The Parkland course is a Gary Player Signature Design course, which is completely different to the other course on site, the ‘Links’ course.

The ‘Parkland’ nestles among the wild olives and carobs typical of the Ragusa countryside, found all around the slopes of the plateau that continues up to Ragusa from the Resort. The holes are well

spread over the landscape and this is a feature of the course, making us feel like we are completely surrounded by nature. The stone walls typical of the area, glimpses of which can be seen next to many of the holes, compliment the course’s features. There are few sand obstacles along the tree-lined fairways, but the insidious greens are well defended by the deep bunkers close to the putting surface. Each successive hole is very different, requiring new golfing solutions and strategies. The 18 holes give onto an archaeological site and one hundred metres from hole 6 we can visit a 6th century B.C. Greek necropolis which is part of the property. A ‘wet’ zone between holes 2 and 3 provides a stopover for animals and birds while two lakes frame the last few holes. Holes 9 and 18 have their greens next to the Resort and form a natural amphitheatre in which the suites, the Clubhouse, the swimming pool and the spa sit side by side.

    The South Course – Links

The Links course, designed by Franco Piras, stretches out over two big valleys, each with a lake that makes the golfing more interesting. The course blends perfectly with the nature reserve, the sea and the island of Malta on the horizon. The fairways are in-cut with re-naturalised areas that caress them and highlight their shapes, adding colours and fragrances that change through the seasons, recreating the original atmosphere of each place. A huge maritime pine is the only tree on the course where large bunkers define the fairways. The course is like a links, except for the presence of the two large artificial lakes that serve as irrigation reserves and oases for migrating birds. Indeed many species find and return to their natural habitat here. The course is highly exposed to the dominant wind from the sea and has multiple tees for each hole to change the course from one day to the next. The landscaping with gentle slopes alternately hides players behind mounds, cutting them off from the rest of the course, and then provides them with incredible views of the course and of the sea.

THE SIGHT SEEING DAY -SICILIAN WINE

    – Exploring a vinery, tasting wine and enjoying dinner

In the afternoon we will depart by private coach, with a tour guide, to the winery where the only Sicilian DOCG wine (controlled and guaranteed denomination of origin) is produced. We will visit the vineyards and the winery. In the ancient barrel store, which provides the most enchanting atmosphere, we will sample the most interesting wines of the winery. We will discover the ancient traditions of wine from Sicily, which date back to the Greek period. Following the wine tasting, we will have dinner amongst the vineyards, before being transferred back to the resort.
