Saturday  18th February – Welcome to Knysna

For the third week of the tour we return to the ever popular Knysna, in the heart of the Garden Route.  In terms of the accommodation for the week, we are heading back to where we first started our South African odyssey many years ago, the Protea Quays Hotel on the Kysna Quays.  What is most important with the Knysna Quays Hotel is to book the Lagoon Facing rooms, which we have done.  To wake up and draw the curtains with the panorma of the Knysna Lagoon before us, is an inspirational way to start the day.  The hotel is also perfectly situated for the many excellent restaurants on the Knysna Quays itself and it is only a short stroll to the main high street in the town.  The hotel also has a heated outdoor swimming pool and a Wellness centre for massages.  With regards to the golf, we will be playing the old favourites, Knysna, two rounds at Simola, Plettenburg Bay and Pezula.  In the depths of the British winter, there are few better places to escape too than the Garden Route in South Africa.

Sunday  18th February – Knysna Golf Club

Our golf on the Garden Route warms up with a most enjoyable round at Knysna Golf Club.  Nestled on the shores of the Knysna Lagoon and close to the Knysna Heads, the course meanders through tidal pools and between magnificent indigenous trees.  The course has been enhanced greatly over the past eleven years since we have been playing it and it has some of the best greens in the Southern Cape.   Our round takes place in the morning, providing time in the afternoon to explore Knysna, so frequently voted South Africa’s favourite town.

Monday 20th February – Simola Golf Club

Year after year this is the course that clients rave about and want to play over and over.  So much so that we are indeed playing it twice again this year.  The Simola course as a golf course challenge is magnificent, but add in the setting, and the jaw drops at the splendour of the forest and the views over the valleys and the Indian Ocean in the distance.  Simola is the first Jack Nicklaus signature course on the Garden Route, reflecting the maestro’s philosophy of attuning the layout and design to the natural lie of the land.  The course offers challenge and reward amidst the spectacular scenery.  Set below the high ridges, the course is free from the wind that so often plagues coastal courses. The fairways flow with the natural undulating contours of the terrain and the unusual configuration of five par 5s and five par 3s adds a new dimension to the round.  Its par for the course that every hole boasts exceptional views; either out across the Knysna Lagoon all the way to the Heads or over the picturesque Knysna River as it twists and turns through the valley below.

Tuesday 21st February – Plettenberg Bay Golf Club

Today we play Plettenberg Bay Golf Club, another favourite with clients.  The course is easy to walk, and the two main inclines can be observed from the veranda of the club house.  Lush Kikuyu grass fairways and bay view greens recently over seeded to bent grass, provide players with an excellent playing surface.  The course also has no intrusive houses or traffic noise and is populated only with indigenous flora and fauna. The natural beauty of the course has been carefully retained.   Baboons, vervet monkeys, birdlife like the Knysna loerie and woodpeckers as well as the occasional bushbuck and deer, are the most likely distraction to our game.  After the round we will head into Plettenberg Bay and the Lookout Deck & Restaurant, which has one of the most spectacular settings along the Garden Route and serves very good food too!

Wednesday 22nd February – Non Golfing Day / Sightseeing Day

For this years’ tour we are purposely keeping the sightseeing days low key, with the emphasis predominantly on a little unique sightseeing, and then heading towards a very good restaurant for a long, relaxing lunch.  We will be collected at 11:00am and taken to view the Noetzie beach and the castles, which are located on the far side of the Pezula Estate, just a mile or so out of Knysna,  From Noetzie, we will then travel to a very good restaurant, where good food and wine can be enjoyed for a couple of hours.  The lunch will be at each persons individual expense, but only because we do not want to limit the menu or wine choice.  We will return to the hotel at approximately 3:30pm for some relaxation, before heading off to dinner.

Thursday 23rd February –  Simola Golf Club

We return to Simola for our second round on the course.  Our instinct with golf tours is to play a course once, in order that as many courses as practical can be experienced.  However, Simola is so good that it really does justify a second round.

Friday 24th February – Pezula Golf Club

For the last round on the Garden Route we tackle the breathtaking and award-winning Pezula Golf Club, which provides one of the ultimate challenges in the area.  A tough challenge, with some of the best scenery from a golf course in South Africa, we will certainly be putting ourselves to the challenge today.

Saturday 25th February – Homeward bound!

After breakfast, we check out of the hotel and head to George airport for the journey home.
