Saturday 11th February – Welcome to Cape Town

We have been travelling to South Africa for what is approaching 20 years now.  Traditionally we have stayed on or close to the V&A Waterfront.  This year however, we are moving slightly around Table Bay and staying at the luxurious Lagoon Beach Hotel & Spa in Milnerton, with its quite exceptional panormic views of Table Bay and Table Mountain.  With its perfect setting, ideal location, excellent service, sophisticated rooms and three superb restaurants, we have a wonderful base for our week in Cape Town.

Sunday 12th February – Royal Cape Golf Club

The Royal Cape Golf Club is very much the establishment course of the Cape Town area.  Established over 100 years ago, the course has now evolved into what it is today a classic parkland course that provides a fine test of golf as well as a wonderful playing experience. The course is in superb year round condition with well grassed fairways, smooth greens and challenging bunkers. It also boasts magnificent views of Table Mountain. Although the course is on flat terrain, the playing of Royal Cape is subject to three of nature’s beguiling offerings, a near constant wind to challenge us, sweeping mountain views to charm and distract us and water features to ensnare us!  The Royal Cape golf course is without doubt one of the best and most challenging courses to play both in the Western Cape. It is a course of championship stature, playing to a par of 72 and which has hosted the South African Open on ten occasions as well as many other professional and top amateur events.

Monday 13th February – Pearl Valley Golf Club

We will take on one of the great courses in South Africa today, the Jack Nicklaus Pearl Valley Golf Club, host to the South African Open and ranked the fifth best golf course in South Africa in the 2010/2011 Golf Digest rankings.  The course is one of the most visually spectacular golf courses in the country and arguably the world.  Every hole is played against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains surrounding the estate and all are challenging due to the strategically set bunkers and fast greens. All par 3s and par 5s play in different directions, ensuring that the same conditions are seldom experienced during a round.  The 13th hole, par 3, is the ‘signature’ hole of the course. The water cuts from the right and a greenside bunker awaits the cautious tee shot. This hole tests both our ball striking and our nerve.  Hole 4 is also challenging, with no room for error as we need to cross the creek three times en route to the green.  This par 5 is listed as one of the best par 5s in South Africa – a real ‘risk and reward’ classic!

Tuesday 14th February– Clovelly Golf Club

We head to what has become our favourite course in the Western Cape over the last 16 years or so, Clovelly.  Clovelly is one of southern Africa’s most picturesque and challenging courses and boasts undulating fairways, magnificent landscaping and features natural sand dunes that abound the course, as well as many natural water features.  Clovelly really is one of the most enjoyable courses in the Cape and a fitting finale to our golf in the Western Cape.

Wednesday 15th February– Non golfing day / Optional sightseeing day

Taking into account clients’ comments and thoughts from previous tours, we have changed our approach to the non-golfing day, which has traditionally involved a full day sightseeing tour.  This year we will head to Table Mountain in the morning, and weather permitting take the cable car to the top.  Following Table Mountain, we will head to a very nice venue for lunch.  The cost of the lunch is not included in the tour cost, simply because we don’t want to limit the quality of what you might like to choose.  Following lunch, we will embark on a short (one hour) tour of Cape Town, such as visiting the Company Gardens for example.  We want the day to be a relaxed one, that involves very little travelling, but which still provides an inspirational expereince.

Thursday 16th February – Milnerton Golf Club

The Milnerton course is one of the few genuine links courses in the Cape Town area, and not only is the course a fine challenge, but the panorma of Table Mountain across Table Bay is simply breathtaking.  Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Rietvlei River, this lush links-type course is fairly flat with few trees. With the sea and the lagoon bordering most holes, and the seven beautiful water holes waiting to claim the wayward shot, it offers a truly unique golfing experience.  After the round we will head to the Sunset lounge in the Clubhouse, situated just a few paces off the beach, to savour the picture postcard view across the bay to Table Mountain.  It really is what Cape Town is all about.  If we are lucky, we may even spot a school of Dolphins that frequent the area.

Friday 17th February – Westlake Golf Club

Set in the leafier of Cape Town’s suburbs and sitting with its back enclosed in the walls of the Silvermine Mountains, Westlake golf course has, over its many illustrious years, gained reputation as one of the Cape’s premiere courses and ‘must plays’.  The doglegs and towering trees, are our primary enemy and yet add incredible beauty and depth to the easy to walk 18 hole, par 72 course. The natural beauty and wildlife that the surrounding mountains have added bring forth an element that most city suburb golf courses could only dream of.  Westlake has built a reputation of being one of the most popular golf course in Cape Town and a day spent here will quickly unveil exactly why. The Club has created an atmosphere that quite literally blends the old with the new and manages, quite successfully, to get the best of both.  Westlake is an incredibly playable course and golfers of all levels will find it incredible rewarding, especially if accurate off the tee.
