• Overview

The Vila Gale Cascais Hotel, Cascais

Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the 4-star Vila Galé Cascais Hotel is only a few feet from the renowned Cascais Marina and a short stroll from the cobbled streets Cascais itself.  The hotel boasts 233 spacious rooms and suites, most with sea views.  The rooms are equipped with air conditioning, flat-screen TV, a desk and a private bathroom with free toiletries.  The Versátil Restaurant, features a show cooking stand and offers a taste the best of Portuguese cuisine, combined with the flavors of the sea.  In addition, there are two bars where we can enjoy a drink.  With the beach of Baía de Cascais only a short walk away, we can opt for an early morning or late afternoon swim or enjoy of the hotel’s pools.  The hotel is also ideally located for the golf courses that we are playing, with all of the courses within 20 minutes of the hotel.

    Penha Longa Golf Club

Ranked in the top 30 Courses in Continental Europe and top 10 in Portugal, the 27-hole course at Penha Longa Resort designed by the famed Robert Trent Jones, Jr. is escapist golf at its best. With its bold drives, courageous approaches and artful greens, it is both an adrenalin rush and a soothing journey through one of Portugal’s most inspiring landscapes. Exciting at every turn, this championship challenge and host to the Portuguese Open, is a master test of variety and thrills.

    Oitavos Golf Club

Oitavos Dunes is ranked as the 65th best course in the world and the second best in mainland Europe. The recognition is a result of several improvements and changes to the course, including a new landing area on 11th hole and new tees on 7th and 9th holes.  The history of the course is quite fascinating.  The grandfather of today’s owner Miguel Champalimaud, Carlos Montez Champalimaud, discovered this magnificent piece of land in 1908. With rare foresight, until his death in 1937, he worked to stabilize the sand dunes and plant pine forests to prepare for the development of a residential estate and tourist destination of exceptional quality.  Permits were secured by his son, Carlos Sommer Champalimaud and in the 50’s and 60’s and the vision for Quinta da Marinha was expanded.  He constructed roads and developed the first home sites. Importantly, he drilled water wells in the adjacent hills and introduced sports facilities for horse racing and tennis.  When his son, Miguel Champalimaud (today’s owner) joined the family business he worked together with his father Carlos to secure final approvals over a 17-year period and since the death of his father, the family vision has come to fruition.

Over recent years, state of the art Health & Racket Club facilities, an Equestrian Centre, and magnificent residential estates have been developed which add to the lure of Quinta da Marinha.  In 2001, the focal point of Quinta da Marinha was the Championship golf course Oitavos Golfe, designed by Arthur Hills to surround a 5-Star Hotel set to open some years later, as indeed it now has.  As the course became recognised internationally as a Links experience, the decision was made to change the name to Oitavos Dunes to reflect the natural sand dunes, impacts of the Ocean and Scottish like playing conditions, which all contribute to the way many view Oitavos Dunes as ‘Natural Links Golf.’ Today, Miguel and his four children remain committed to the family legacy and vow to continue to enhance the reputation and prestige of Quinta da Marinha and the Oitavos Dunes course in the years ahead.

    Estoril Golf Club

The Estoril Championship Course started in 1929 and was redesigned in 1936 by Mackenzie Ross. It is known as one of the oldest and most emblematic clubs in Portugal and where two of the Portuguese most important tournaments have been held frequently, the Portuguese Open for 20 years and the Portuguese International Amateur Championships for 63 years.  Overlooking Estoril and the sea, this 5,200 metre long course is set amongst eucalyptus, mimosas and pine trees giving a uniquely colorful touch that demands excellent tactics.  The course challenges players in accuracy rather than distance. The visually stunning par 3 holes, although they vary in length, all pose particular challenges; the 4th hole (Pepper’s Hole) is surrounded by pepper trees; the 8th hole (The Tea Cup) is well known, due to the always challenging flag position.   A superb course and a fitting way to finish the tour.
