• Overview

Our accommodation is the 4 Star Vila Gale Ampalius Hotel, located close to the Marina in Vilamoura.  With sea-view rooms and easy access to the shops and restaurants of Vilamoura, the hotel provides the ideal base for our New Year week.  It is not just the golf that makes this week special; it is the camaraderie within the group.  Both the Christmas and New Year weeks are social weeks, where we combine great golf, good hotels with a wonderful social environment for all.  Whether you are meeting up with old friends, or taking the opportunities to meet new like minded people, we will do everything that we can to ensure that this week and the Christmas week before, bring smiles, laughter and happy long lasting memories.

Throughout the Tour, there will also be the opportunity for some informal golf lessons.  Simply let me know if you would like some tuition and if so, clinics will be arranged accordingly.

To book your place(s) on the New Year Golf Tour, please contact us and we will send you the confirmation details accordingly.

The 4 Star Vila Gale Ampalius hotel has become our traditional accommodation venue for the New Year tour week.  As with previous years we have booked superior sea view rooms.  With the plethora of shops and restaurants close to the hotel, we have the perfect base for our New Year week in the Algarve.  The hotel also has an excellent outdoor pool, a health club, and a tennis court and provides very good access to all of the golf courses.

Opened in 1974, Quinta do Lago South has hosted the ‘Portuguese Open Championship’ eight times, together with many other important professional and amateur championships. The course is set in a natural setting surrounded by umbrella pines, lakes and wild vegetation, with the stunning Ria Formosa nature reserve as the backdrop.  Each hole has generous landing areas off the tees and well-defined routes through the woodland and pine setting.

The Vila Sol golf course, designed by Donald Steel, was inaugurated in 1991 and indeed hosted the Portuguese Open in both 1991 and 1992.  The course winds through an immense pinewood, and poses a real test of our strategic skills.  The narrow fairways demand accurate driving and we also have several obstacles to face during our round; lakes, bunkers as well as fast grass on the greens.

Pinheiros Altos is now established as one of the most prestigious golf courses in the Algarve.  The 27 holes are presented in three contrasting nine hole format and each is named as ‘The Pines (Pinheiros)’, ‘The Corks (Sobreiros)’, and ‘The Olives (Oliveiras)’.  All nine holes have their starting and finishing points in close proximity to the beautiful Pinheiros Altos Clubhouse. The original 18-hole course was designed by Californian architect Ronald Fream.  The first 9 holes played over rolling sandy undergrowth with pine trees all around.  The second 9 holes ran through hills, with lakes presenting the main obstacle for golfers.   Jorge Santana da Silva was selected to design the third loop of 9-holes.  The third loop were inserted in amongst the original opening nine, with four holes (holes 4 to 7) in the Pinheiros 9-hole course, and the remaining new five holes (holes 2 to 6) in a loop called Sobreiros, making the course as it is today.

The Quinta do Lago’s Laranjal course is one of the finest courses in the Algarve and a favourite with clients in recent years.  The course, which was originally an orange grove, is a sanctuary for fine golf.  The narrow fairways and the well defined greens require concentration and accuracy to navigate what is a testing course laid out on a rolling and distinctive terrain. It is a par 72, 6,480 metres long, with five par 5s, eight par 4s and five par 3s, all set amongst umbrella pines, cork-oaks and orange trees, with a natural water course and five beautiful lakes.

The Oceanico Old Course is often described as the Grande Dame of the Algarve courses.  The course is one of the oldest in the Algarve and is renowned all over the golfing world.  Although opened in 1969, the course was completely renovated and modernised in 1997, although no major changes were made to the magnificent layout.  ‘Golf Digest’ has rated the Old Course amongst the world’s top 100.  The fairways run through surrounding pine trees and present an extra challenge to our game.  The course visually is a very attractive course with a great variety of holes, perfectly maintained due in part to a sophisticated irrigation system.  The Par 3 holes in particular are quite stunning and all quite different and they represent the toughest challenge on the course.  They all require careful selection of irons and near perfect ball control and the greens are small especially on the shorter holes, where there is simply no margin for error.
