In terms of the golf, we have included two rounds at San Lorenzo, one at Pinheiros Altos and rounds on the ever-popular Vale do Lobo courses, the Royal and the Ocean. Furthermore, all four courses are located close to the hotel; hence there is very little travel time involved each day.
With Barney running another very strong tour in terms of quality, based at the Tivoli Marina Hotel in Vilamoura, we are limiting the number of places available on this trip to 18 clients and on Barney’s trip to 14. Given the demand for both trips, please contact Iain as soon as practical, if you wish to book your place on the tour.
With regards to the dining arrangements, two dinners at the hotel are included in the tour programme, firstly on the arrival night and secondly on the last evening of the tour. I will make restaurant reservations on the remaining evenings, including for New Years’ Eve. We are not including the Hotel’s New Years’ Eve Gala Dinner on this occasion, although if you would like to book it at a supplementary cost, you can certainly do so.
For the tour this year, please also note that the rooms are based on the Resort’s ‘Superior Rooms’. However, there is the option to take the slightly less expensive ‘Classic Rooms’, with the cost saving illustrated in the notes section of the pricing summary.
THE DONA FILIPA HOTEL
The Dona Filipa Hotel is quite simply one of the finest hotels in the Algarve. The hotel has been welcoming guests since 1968. The hotel is famous for delivering traditional Portuguese style and charm, with all the comfort, luxury and elegance one would expect from an award winning five-star hotel. After a great round on the golf course, a relaxing trip to the beach, or even a fun filled day exploring the extensive natural beauty nearby and nature reserves, one will be welcomed back into a luxury room containing everything we need to relax and recharge for the next stage of our holiday.
Pinheiros Altos Golf Club
The 27-hole Pinheiros Altos Golf Course is situated in the Quinta do Lago nature reserve. The fairways of the 27-holes run through the pine tree forest and over generous and attractive open spaces. Located within the well-known luxury Quinta do Lago Estate, this course has gained a solid reputation for providing great enjoyment, whilst also a stern mental challenge due to the well-placed hazards. There are three independent loops of nine holes, and they are named the Pinheiros (Pines), Sobreiros (Corks), the Oliveiras (Olives), the Pinheiros (Pines), respectively. They all start and end at the Club House.
San Lorenzo Golf Club
The San Lorenzo golf course is located in the Quinta do Lago nature reserve, and enjoys a reputation for the excellent condition of its fairways and its attractive views around a lake formed by the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve. It was many years at one time ranked as the second best course to play in Europe. The outward first five holes are through the pine tree forest. Water and good hole layouts provides the hazards that play a big part in us having to select the right club and hit with care. The eighteenth is a tricky Par-4 mainly involving a lake that is just waiting for the inaccurate shot.
Vale do Lobo Golf Club – Royal Course
The 18-hole championship Vale do Lobo Royal golf course, the sister course to the Ocean course, has combined several existing holes from the original Vale do Lobo course and introduced some special interesting new holes. The layout of the course is skilfully planned with a mixture of challenges slowly building up to a fine challenge on the 18th. The famous Par 3 7th hole from the old days is now the spectacular 16th on the new course. The closing 18th is a tricky hole on which to finish, with its narrow fairway and a deceptive green.
Vale do Lobo Golf Club – Ocean Course
The Ocean Course, composed of the two original 9-hole golf courses designed by Sir Henry Cotton, features gently undulating fairways which run alongside nature reserve before leading gently down to the shores of the Atlantic. Its emblematic holes are two challenging and spectacular Par 4s, the 11th and the 14th, and the Par 3 15th which runs alongside the beach.
