• Overview

Madeira has a wonderful charisma that combines an elegant way of living with what feels like a retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life.  Each evening Barney will arrange for restaurants to be booked for the group, providing the opportunity to embrace the social ambience of the Island, as well as the golf.  It is in fact the mix of the golf and the social experience that has made the golf weeks so popular over the years.  One plays wonderful golf courses, receive expert tuition and then experience the real heartbeat of the locations that we visit and all in the company of like-minded golfers.

The 5 star Pestana Carlton Hotel is a fabulous hotel, set on the cliffs above the Atlantic Ocean.  With the mountains in the background, the bay at the side, the Atlantic in the foreground and with the shade of palm trees, well, you can imagine the setting!

The hotel is a 10 minute stroll from the centre of Funchal and provides the most wonderful environment in which to relax. The hotel has a number of restaurants.  ‘Os Arcos’ is the main restaurant and serves magnificent breakfast and dinner buffets.  There is also the lobby bar, the famous wooden ‘The Pub’, which serves delicious snacks, soups, fish n’chips and allows us to keep up to date with all of the sporting activities back t home.  For a more sophisticated meal, we can go to the Taverna Grill, which has an extensive wine global wine list, as well as serving traditional Madeiran dishes.

The facilities of the hotel are also excellent.  There are two very large outdoor pools.  The first is an outdoor heated salt water pool.  For the second pool, we head down the grand staircase towards the sea and can swim in a wonderful 25 metre pool next to the Atlantic Ocean.  The hotel also has ‘Relaxation Rooms’, evoking the Levadas and the Laurisilva forests.  Or let the mischievous bubbles from the outdoor jacuzzi keep all serious faces away, or indeed head to the spa where the relaxing colours and the energizing treatments from leave us as good as new. The hotel really does provide a wonderful location for our stay in Madeira.

    Santo da Serra Golf Club

Keith Waters, The European Tour’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “The Madeira Islands Open has become an established stop on the Tour Schedule, and provide a welcome opportunity for all of members to play and earn valuable Race to Dubai and World Ranking points. The beauty and ambience of the Island makes the week all the more enjoyable. We are grateful for the continued support of the Government and the members of Club de Golf Santo da Serra.”   Indeed Mats Lanner, the only player to have won the Madeira Islands Open twice, relishes every opportunity to return to the picturesque island and he has been impressed by the improvements on the course since his glory days. “It has really improved since I was playing here. The greens are looking great, the rough is so much better now than it has ever been and the views are inspirational too.”  On a clear day, the panorama from the course is simply breath taking.  The origins of golf in Madeira can be traced to Santo da Serra in the twenties. The nine-hole Serras course was opened in 1937 and in 1991 Robert Trent Jones Sr. created the 18 Championship holes.  The golf course, now 27 holes, has gone from strength to strength ever since.

    Palheiro Golf Club

The Palheiro golf course is one of Europe’s most beautiful golf courses.  Set within the magnificent Palheiro Estate and lying adjacent to the 5 star Casa Velha do Palheiro Hotel, a Relais & Chateaux property, the 18 hole, par 72 Championship golf course meanders through a pristine environment of maritime pine and botanical woodland embroidered with lush, sub-tropical vegetation.
At nearly 500 metres above sea level, the location is blessed with dramatic views of Madeira’s mountainous skyline and the vast Atlantic Ocean, and nestling below Funchal, the island’s capital.  Designed by renowned golf architect, Cabell B. Robinson, this picturesque layout with year round appeal takes full advantage of Madeira’s hilly terrain, with abrupt ridges and deep valleys providing a compelling challenge for even the most seasoned golfer.  Teeing off here is to walk through a verdant and tranquil 200 year old country estate, with an abundance of fragrant, exotic flora which provides the course with its unique and singular quality. Melodic birdsong enriches the experience too.  Play calls for a fair degree of accuracy; the contoured fairways and strategically placed bunkers guarding fast, undulating greens, means there is little room for error. A halfway house, The Tea House, offers refreshments and a chance to pause and assess scorecards.
Indeed, a round of golf at Palheiro engages all the senses and rewards those of all abilities with an enjoyable and memorable experience.
