• Overview

We have four pre-booked dinners at four superb local restaurants in the area, which we will provide us with a taste of the finest cuisine in the region.  On the non golfing day on the Wednesday, we will also have an excursion to the quite beautiful medieval village of Obidos.  The ‘Silver Coast’ of Portugal is wonderful open stretch of Atlantic coastline and with this week we are seeking to embrace this sense of freedom with a combination of some fine golf and excellent, varied cuisine.  For lovers of golf and cuisine, this is an ideal week to select!

The Sana Silver Coast Hotel is located in the centre of Caldas da Rainha, a short distance from Óbidos and only 45 minutes away from Lisbon.  This newly renovated hotel boasts 80 rooms and 7 suites, an excellent restaurant, bar and a café with an outdoor terrace.  The hotel has maintained the original 19th century façade, but with its new interiors and elegant décor, modern facilities compliment the historical pedigree of this 19th century neoclassical hotel.

    Royal Obidos Golf Club

The Royal Obidos course is approximately 7,300 yards off the back tees and represents a true test of golf for players of all levels.  The first hole, a generous right handed dogleg, heads north, setting up a spectacular combination of holes overlooking the lagoon (Lagoa de Óbidos).  The feature hole of the front nine is the 3rd, a 144m Par 3 off the yellow tees to an island green, with the stunning Óbidos lagoon in the background.  The second nine holes overlook the Atlantic Ocean.  Six of the holes meander between an intricate eco-system of lakes interconnected by cascading streams.  The highlight of the back nine is the 18th, a 490m Par 5 off the yellow tees, with a panoramic view over the back nine, the clubhouse and the Ocean beyond.  The clubhouse offers a restaurant with a variety of menus, two bars, a lounge, pro-shop and a bags storage area.  Sitting out on the generous terrace, we can enjoy spectacular views of the golf course and the cascading lakes and streams, and if time allows some truly wonderful sunsets over the Atlantic Ocean.

    Praia D’El Rey

Praia D’El Rey is arguably one of the most stunning golf courses in Europe.  The course is set amongst extensive pine forests and undulating dunes, with spectacular views over the Atlantic Ocean and to the Berlengas Islands beyond.  The 18-hole golf course was designed by the renowned American golf architect Cabell B. Robinson and was inaugurated on 14th June 1997.  Deep bunkers, sloping greens and sandy dunes contrast sharply with the lush fairways, making it the complete golfing challenge.  A mix of holes, some in the mighty dunes others amongst fragrant pines, present a wild and wonderful challenge.  Praia D’El Rey is rated amongst the top golf courses in Europe by Golf World Magazine and is one of Portugal’s major golfing destinations for both private and sponsored events.  The course is a mixture of seaside links and parkland holes with a par of 73 and will present us with a varied, unique and quite wonderful challenge.

The Sabores d’Italia Restaurant – Italian Cuisine

One of the best known restaurants in the region.  The owners have created a very inviting environment in the heart of Caldas da Rainha.  The quality of food is always at the highest level, the service is friendly yet very professional.  The restaurant has interesting and somewhat unusual dishes, with a very local touch, namely with some great dishes with wild mushrooms or the wonderful ‘Pera Rocha’ (a type of pear which is typical of the region) dessert, which is made in one of three different ways.

The Nau dos Corvos Restaurant – Portuguese Fish and Seafood

The location of the Nau dos Corvos Restaurant is exceptional.  On top of the restaurant there is a terrace with a terrific view of the Atlantic Ocean and the rocky coastline of Peniche.  And the cuisine certainly compliments the views, as does the friendly and professional service.  Just to whet the appetite, consider a starter of tomato-fish soup, followed by a dish of ‘robalo selvagem’ or literally wild seabass.  The fish used by the restaurant are caught by the Peniche fisherman in the Atlantic Ocean often that morning.  We would be offered eight different ways of preparing the seabass.  Robalo Panado (seabass coated with breadcrumbs) on a bed of spinach is but just one of them!  Alternatively the seabass can be presented on a mousse of peas, served with a cream of red peppers and a gratin of potatoes.  Simply a taste of what this dining experience has in store for us.

Dom Jose Restaurant – Portuguese Cuisine

A great restaurant with an outstanding menu and matching service.  An example of what we can expect at this restaurant would be a ‘pork and clam’ main course followed by excellent homemade truffles.  The restaurant is very much regarded as a ‘must dine’ destination when visiting this part of Portugal.

The Foz Vintage Restaurant – Portuguese Tapas Bar with local delicacies

The Foz Vintage Restaurant is highly recommended for its excellent cuisine and also its wine.  The restaurant provides a very relaxed, but also efficient atmosphere.  The staff are also very helpful in recommending local wines for anyone who has not visited the area before.  Another ‘must dine’ restaurant for this region of Portugal.

The entirety of Obidos has been declared as a national monument.  Obidos is known as the ‘Wedding Present Town’ because it was a gift that King Dinis gave to Queen Isabel on their wedding day in 1282, but that alone is not what makes the town such an extraordinarily romantic place.  What makes it one of Europe’s most romantic medieval villages are its incredibly picturesque cobblestone streets, lined with colorful houses filled with geraniums and bougainvillea.  There are Gothic doorways and windows, whitewashed churches, flowerpots and dazzling tiles, all encircled by the walls of a 12th century castle.  We need to scale the 13m (45ft) high medieval walls to admire this picture postcard perfect town.
