Wednesday 1st October – Welcome to Florida!

Hyatt Grand Cypress, golf clubhouseOn arrival into Orlando we will be met and transferred to one of Orlando’s premier resorts, the Grand Cypress Golf Resort. With exquisite accommodation, a plethora of leisure activities on site, superb dining options and 45 holes of Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf, there can be few better locations to commence our Florida Golf Tour. Overnight:      The Grand Cypress Golf Resort, Orlando

Thursday 2nd October – Grand Cypress Golf Resort – New Course

Florida_Grand_Cypress_ResortWe commence our golf with a round on the Grand Cypress New Course.  Set in the midst of an open meadow, the course is Jack Nicklaus’ tribute and homage to the famed Old Course at St. Andrews.  This Scottish links masterpiece is complete with double greens, stone bridges and walls, gorse mounds, burns and pot bunkers, some as deep as 12 feet, all in the spirit of the true Scottish original. Very little water comes into play on the New Course, but when it does it will challenge us.  Very few trees are located within the interior of the course, creating generous landing areas.  However, an errant tee shot could find its way into one of the 150 pot bunkers.  We may be in Florida, but day one of our tour is going to feel like we are playing in the Kingdom of Fife! See Barney’s report when he played earlier this year.

Friday 3rd October – Magnolia Golf Club

Magnolia Course Disney WorldThe Magnolia course is the longest of the Walt Disney World Resort golf courses and a quite superb championship course.  Named for its majestic magnolia trees, this course features elevated tees, spacious greens and challenging water hazards. Wide fairways invite us to hit the ball long, but we must beware, eleven of the 18 holes boast water hazards and 97 bunkers dot the landscape in readiness for us.  Certified by Audubon International as a Cooperative Wildlife Sanctuary and rated 4 stars by Golf Digest, Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course represents a paradise for serious golfers, as well as a thrilling challenge for players at all levels.

Saturday 4th October – From Orlando to Naples

Inn On Fifth Photo 2010Today we head south to the enchanting coastal town of Naples. Naples is the crown jewel of south west Florida, nestled on the sun drenched beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. Naples is known for world class shopping, dining and abundant, challenging golf courses.  It is also only steps away from island seclusion or the untamed tropical wilderness of The Everglades and boasts some of the Country’s finest beaches and calmest seas.  Our accommodation in Naples is the Inn on Fifth Hotel, a luxury hotel in the heart of Old Naples. The hotel’s two iconic structures face each other across the fashionable Fifth Avenue South, mirror images of elegance reflecting the best of downtown Naples and its celebrated entertainment, shopping and dining district. And with a sugar-white stretch of world famous beach just a short stroll down the avenue, and easy access to some of Florida’s most exclusive golf courses and legendary natural attractions, the Inn on Fifth is one of Naples’ most enviable locations.  Sophisticated yet unpretentious, the Inn on Fifth is intimate in scale and rich in amenities. We can enjoy the Inn’s rooftop oasis pool, chic Spa on Fifth, two award-winning restaurants and 24-hour fitness centre.  A wonderful hotel for our stay in Naples.

Sunday 5th October – Tiburón Golf Club

Magnolia Course Disney WorldSophisticated and alluring, Tiburón’s two 18-hole championship courses are home to the Franklin Templeton Shootout, which brings many of the top names in golf to this prestigious golf destination.  A favorite of both professional and amateur golfers alike, Tiburón is carved out of 800 acres of native Florida foliage and plays like a classic links course. Golf legend and course designer Greg Norman blended traditional and modern elements to create an elegant and stunningly beautiful golf experience that is challenging for any player. Nowhere else will we find the combination of stacked sod-wall bunkers, approaches cut to the height of most greens and tricky coquina waste bunkers.  From our first drive to our last putt, we will find ourselves at one with nature and enjoying a unique golf experience.

Overnight:     The Inn on the 5th, Naples

Monday 6th October – Lely Golf Club – The Mustang Course

The Lely Resort Golf & Country Club is home to 36 holes of spectacular golf with two distinct Championship Courses, the Flamingo Island course, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., and the Mustang Course designed by Lee Trevino.  It is the Mustang course that we will be playing today.  Following Lee Trevino’s philosophy of making the game challenging but fair for the average golfer, the course offers a variety of golf holes that are difficult to a point, but always fun to play and where we can always recover from an errant shot.  Punctuated by twelve sparkling lakes, the Mustang gently flows across undulating fairways and winds through stands of towering Florida pines. Strategically placed bunkers will test our decision-making prowess as well as shot making abilities.

Tuesday 7th October – Sightseeing Day

Florida EvergladesWe venture away from the fairways and greens today and explore the Everglades during the day.  The Everglades are the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States.  The Everglades National Park protects an unparalleled landscape that provides important habitat for numerous rare and endangered species like the manatee, American crocodile and the elusive Florida panther.  The Everglades are an international treasure as well, being a World Heritage Site, International Biosphere Reserve, a Wetland of International Importance, and a specially protected area under the Cartagena Treaty.  We will learn all about the Everglades and experience this astonishing environment at first hand.  In the evening we will embark on a dinner cruise, where we will enjoy some fine cuisine and wine, view the Naples coastline from the sea and have a look at where the great and the good, well the very rich (!), live in Naples.

Wednesday 8th October – Old Corkscrew Golf Club

old-corkscrew-golf-coursToday we head to the Old Corkscrew Golf Club, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Design course. The course has received many coveted awards and meets the highest design criteria. The course, which is not part of any real estate development, has been developed to blend precisely with the outstanding natural assets, which are mature oak, pine and cypress trees.  It is a spectacular golf course.  From the back tees, the course is rated as one of most challenging in Florida.  Annually, the course plays hosts to FSGA and USGA events, and recently in 2011 and 2012, was the host qualifying course for the ACE Group Championship, PGA Champions Tour. A ‘must play’ course given that we are staying in the area.

Thursday 9th October – Lely Golf Club – The Flamingo Island Course

We return to the Lely Golf Club today to play the Flamingo Island Course.  Designed and built by one of the great masters and world renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., the Lely Flamingo Island Club has twice been designated by Golf Week as one of ‘America’s Best,’ whilst Golf Digest gives it four stars. With its hourglass fairways, fingered sand bunkers and large undulating greens, the golf course is destined to provide many exciting challenges. The picturesque par-3 fifth, ‘Flamingo Island’ hole, is absolutely unforgettable.

Friday 10th October – TPC Treviso Bay Golf Club

treviso_bay_naplesWe conclude our golf in Florida with one of the most picturesque and beautifully maintained golf courses in the Naples area.  Architect Arthur Hills and player consultant Hal Sutton were handed a virtual jungle five miles east of Naples bordering the 110,000 acre Rookery Bay National Estuarine Reserve.  They created the stunning 7,367 yard TPC Trevisco Bay golf course.  The design of the course challenges not only our skills with a golf club, but our ability to out think the course and the conditions.  Each hole tests our ability to fit the shot to the situation, whether it is how to play a bump-and-run, high fade, lob shot, wind-cheater, or the hardest shot of all, the straight drive. At TPC Treviso Bay we will need them all!  In the evening we will reflect on the days past and hopefully take home many good memories as the tour draws to a close.
