It is not just the golf and the wonderful regions that we visit that make the tours such special occasions, but also the camaraderie of the other tour members. Each evening restaurants will be booked and we will discuss the day and life in general. Indeed, we put great emphasis on the social side of the tours, to ensure that they are all enjoyed by all.
The tour is structured so that you can book all three weeks, or perhaps weeks 1 and 2 or 2 and 3 for example. Please tell us what you would prefer, and we will make the appropriate bookings.
From Selborne we travel north to Durban and the ever popular Umhlanga Rocks area of the City. For this particular week, we will play a variety of different courses and taking in the best courses in Durban. We are purposefully touring slighter later this year in order to stay in Durban when it is less humid. Indeed late March to April is regarded as one of the best times to travel to the city, as the weather can be at its best.
THE PROTEA HOTEL UMHLANGA RIDGE
The Protea Hotel Durban Umhlanga Ridge is ideally located in the Umhlanga area of Durban. Opposite the Gateway Theatre of Shopping, with its plethora of shops and restaurants and close also to the spectacular local beaches. The hotel is defined by its tasteful blend of Colonial style and contemporary decor. All rooms have been thoughtfully furnished and decorated in complimentary tones, which are enhanced by the rich laminate timber floors and high ceilings. The stunning roof-level swimming pool boasts breathtaking views, allowing us to marvel at the picturesque Umhlanga region while soaking up the sun. The hotel also overlooks the eye-catching 2-hectare Chris Saunders Park with its rolling lawns, tranquil ponds and creative water features.
DURBAN COUNTRY CLUB
Opened in 1922, the Durban Country Club is regarded as one of the best golf courses in South Africa and is acknowledged to have the best third hole in the world. Playing from a high tee to a narrow fairway with dense bush and a predatory bunker on the left-hand side we’ll see why this hole is the most popular on the course. The course has also hosted the South African Open Championships 14 times. With its dense bush, indigenous trees and undulating fairways, it is hard to believe that this spectacular championship course is situated in the centre of Durban. The course is both scenic and demanding and to score well we are going to have to play well. Although extremely challenging to the most skilled golfer, the course will be enjoyed by all, but rarely mastered.
MOUNT EDGECOMBE COUNTRY CLUB
Formerly Huletts Country Club, the Mount Edgecombe course has been redesigned by Hugh Baiocchi to create a memorable championship course. It has a beautiful setting in the sugar cane country on the north Kwa-Zulu Natal coast. The fairways sweep between densely massed pines, tall gum trees and beautiful shrubs. The new course has an interesting layout, characterised by attractive water features and large, multi-tiered greens planted with country club grass.
PRINCE’S GRANT GOLF CLUB
The Prince’s Grant Golf Estate is a quiet oasis offering golf with breathtaking views set against the backdrop of the crystal blue Indian Ocean and Natal’s scenic coastal beauty. Since opening in 1994, the Prince’s Grant golf course has earned a reputation for excellence. Prince’s Grant is a regular recipient of the Compleat Golfer 5-Star Golf Experience Award and has been named the Best Golf Development in South Africa by the World Property Awards. The golf course has a links / parkland layout, designed and constructed by Peter Matkovich, and is laid out over four ridge lines overlooking the Indian Ocean. Sweeping, majestic views over the ocean, with spectacular coastal forest makes this one of the most scenic and visually stunning golf courses in South Africa. But it is the quality of the golf course design and the lovingly groomed condition of greens and fairways that make Prince’s Grant a bucket list golf course for golfers.
DURBAN COUNTRY CLUB – BEACHWOOD COURSE
The Beachwood Course is located at the Durban Country Club. Bordering the Indian Ocean, there are 41 bunkers around the greens and 33 fairway bunkers waiting for wayward shots. Four of the holes are blessed with water features and most fairways are lined with trees. Another interesting aspect of the course is that it lies at the southern end of Virginia Airport, which is used mainly for small commercial aircraft, private flights, training flights and helicopters. The aircraft taking off and landing all adds to the intrigue of playing the holes at this end of the course.
