Thursday 20th November – Golf on site at the Nirwana Bali Golf Club

Our first round of golf is one of three that we will play on-site at the spectacular Nirwana Bali course.  Let me allow Mr Norman to do the talking:

    Dear Friends,
Every golf course designer dreams of the perfect landscape to fashion into a beautiful and challenging golf course. There is no doubt that the physical characteristics of the Nirwana Bali Golf Course site are conducive to doing just that.

When I first saw the site, I was immediately taken by the dramatic location, the fascinating local culture and the rolling hills covered with rice paddies. I was determined to keep all these features while building a golf course that would challenge even the world’s best.

While keeping this site’s natural features, we have created some of the most dramatic holes in golf. The 7th hole is especially challenging, requiring the golfer to hit a middle iron from the cliff side tee across a piece of the ocean to a scenic and well-guarded green. Hole 13 will require all a golfer’s skill and concentration as it plays along Indian Ocean cliff tops. Hole 14 is a dramatic par 3, with the ocean thundering below.

Capturing the Balinese style, Nirwana Bali Golf Club provides truly world class facilities to those who can appreciate the best. I’m proud to have played a part in developing this world-class golf course.

    Greg Norman

Having played the course, the wait is on to play it again!

Friday 21st November – Bali National Golf Resort

We travel off-site today to the Bali National Golf Club.  The Club is located at the southern tip of the island and in the past has hosted the 1994 Asian Dunhill Masters where Nick Faldo shot the course record 63, and in 1997 the Bali National Golf Club was voted one of Asia’s top five golf courses by Fortune Magazine.  Two distinct terrains have been used to create the Bali National. The outward nine plays up through the hills with lush tropical and jungle fauna.  Spectacular views of Indian Ocean and the Nusa Dua area are afforded on practically every hole. Hand-built local stone walls have been incorporated into the golf course design to terrace the sides of fairways and tee boxes. This gives one the impression of being in the typical rice field terraces that characterise the Bali countryside. Watch out for some unusual terraced landscaping hazards that might just inspire a kind of longing for a good old-fashioned bunker. The inward nine plays on level land through coconut trees and a series of man-made lakes. Hole 17, one of the signature holes, is Bali’s answer to the famous TPC Sawgrass 17th. The dangerous par-3 played to an island green requires a well-struck tee shot to avoid a watery beginning. The final hole is an excellent dogleg left which sets up for good birdie possibilities with spectators viewing the finish from the modern clubhouse.
Shared golf carts are compulsory and one caddy is provided for each golfer. The mature natural setting of the Bali National Golf Club provides us with the best playing experience on the island.

Sat 22nd November – Full Day Ubud Village Tour

We venture away from the fairways today and head to the village of Ubad.  Ubud is a remarkable town in the middle of the island. For more than a century, it has been the island’s preeminent centre for fine arts, dance and music. While it once was a haven for scruffy backpackers, cosmic seekers, artists and bohemians, Ubud is now a hot spot for literati, glitterati, art collectors and connoisseurs. Famous names walk its busy sidewalks every day. Elegant five star hotels and sprawling mansions now stand on its outskirts, overlooking the most prized views in Bali. Nonetheless, Ubud is still popular with backpackers, mystics and all the finest fringe elements of global society.  The village draws people who add something; people who are actively involved in art, nature, anthropology, music, dance, architecture, environmentalism and more.  In the company of a private tour guide we will explore what makes Ubud so special and such a magnet to so many people. Lunch is included within the sightseeing programme.

Sunday 23rd November – Bali Handara Kosaido Country Club

The Bali Handara Kosaido Country Club must be one of the most astonishing golf courses on Bali if not around all of South East Asia. The course is set in the lush highlands of Bali and is nestled in the crater of a volcano in the mountains of Bedugul.   The course is located on an altitude of 1,142 metres above sea level with temperatures moderate between 14 and 20 degrees Celsius.  The golf course is pleasant to play due to mild temperature and the overwhelming view of lush tropical forest.  The championship golf course was designed by Australians Peter Thompson and Michael Wolveridge in 1974. Mature tree-lined fairways, indigenous flowers, and Bent grass greens characterise the layout.  A day in which we will enjoy a relaxing round of golf in an truly unique setting.

Monday 24th November – Nirwana Bali Golf Club

We enjoy our second round at Nirwana Golf Club today.  We all dream of the perfect landscape to play and there is no doubt that the physical characteristics of the Nirwana Bali Golf Course are just that.  The golf course overlooks the Indian Ocean and weaves through rice terraces and towering palm trees.  A 6,805 yard par 72 championship golf course, it has been voted by Golf Digest and Asian Golf Monthly as the best golf course in Indonesia and the best golf resort in Asia.  It is a visual masterpiece of dramatic ocean views and lush Balinese landscapes and offers a spectacular challenge for golfers of all abilities.

Tuesday 25th November – Experience Bali

We will have the morning to relax and enjoy the facilities of the resort, before we embark on what should be an afternoon and evening to remember.  Firstly we will visit the Cliff Temple, before enjoying a seafood dinner on the beach, watching a Fire Dance and then the very famous Kecak Dance.  The Kecak Dance is especially unique and possibly the most dramatic of all Balinese dances. A combination of dance and drama, the Kecak dance depicts the Hindu epic, ‘Ramayana,’ that tells the story of Prince Rama, who with the help of the monkey-like Vanara defeats the evil King Ravana to rescue his Princess Sita. Kecak also has roots in Sanghyang, a sacred ritual based on the idea that during the performance, hyangs, or spiritual entities will enter and possess the bodies of the dancers.

Wednesday 26th November – Bali National Golf Resort

We return to the Bali National Golf Resort today for a second round on the course.  Although the Nirwana Bali Golf Club is unquestionably the most dramatic and inspiring golf course on the tour, the Bali National course is arguably the best golf course in terms of design and presentation and is therefore well worth the second round.

Thursday 27th November – New Kuta Golf Club

The fourth course that we play in Bali is New Kata Golf Club.  The course is located on Bali’s southern shore in the Pecatu compound at Dreamland Beach and is one of Bali’s finest and most spectacular golf courses.  Carved out of harsh limestone between the brilliant white cliffs and the blue waters of the Indian Ocean the course ranks among Asia’s most spectacular.  The course is surrounded by breathtaking sea views with waves crashing at the base of many of the holes. The landscape includes rolling links-styled fairways, semi-rough of natural grasses and sand and undulated greens.   Not only is the course stunning visually and a fine challenge, but it is also recognised for its environmental conservation. In October 2008, the New Kuta Golf was awarded the certificate of ‘IGOLF Laureate Course’ from the International Golf and Life Foundation (IGOLF) for environmental conservation.

Friday 28th November – Nirwana Bali Golf Club, ending as we began

The Nirwana Bali course is one of the most photographed and challenging golf courses in the world.  The breathtaking beauty of this course is highlighted by terraced rice fields forming some of the rough and strategically placed bunkers.  Three holes play on top of the cliffs of the Indian Ocean with a famous Hindu temple protecting the course from the gods at sea.  Hole 13 requires all a golfer’s skill and concentration as it plays along Indian Ocean cliff tops.  Hole 14 is a dramatic par-3, with the ocean thundering below.  The long 441 yard par-4 5th hole is the most spectacular and difficult.  We could keep talking about the course, but the best thing to do, is come and play it!

Saturday 29th November – Heading home

Sadly these great expeditions must come to an end, although a good antidote is always to book the next one, and start the build up to the next adventure.  Bali is a spiritual island, an island full of colour, character and a magic that can’t be described.  I hope that our farewell is simply a temporary one and that the opportunity to return will soon loom on the horizon.  Transfers will be provided throughout the day for the journey back to the airport and the flights home.
