The golf programme this year includes the three Quinta do Lago courses, North, Laranjal and South, which are always so well received. We will also be playing the Old Course and Millennium Course, both of which are in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. Five high class golf courses to enjoy during our Christmas week.
With regards to dining, we have booked four dinners at the hotel, which includes a special dinner on Christmas night. I will book restaurants within the Marina area on the other three evenings, thereby providing the opportunity to have both the convenience of dining in the hotel, but also the opportunity to dine out at some fine establishments during the course of the week.
The Anantara Hotel, Vilamoura
The Anantara Hotel brand is synonymous with quality and elegance the world over. And so what better way than to spend the Christmas week in one of the Algarve’s finest 5-star hotels, surrounded by golf courses and yet only a short distance from the Marina in Vilamoura. The accommodation and facilities are of the highest order, complimented by the surrounding environment of golf courses and sea. The Resort features a full-service spa, swimming pools, an outdoor tennis court and a host of other facilities. Dining is available at one of the hotel’s three restaurants, and guests unwind with a drink at one of the hotel’s bars. The hotel provides the idea location for the Vilamoura Christmas Golf Tour.
THE GOLF COURSES
Dom Pedro Golf Club – Millennium Course
Boasting a unique position within the Vilamoura portfolio, it is often asserted that the creation of the Millennium course was pivotal in cementing the status of the Algarve as one of Europe’s most-visited and best-loved for golf. Opened in the year 2000 and comprising nine brand new holes and a refurbished inward half, which had previously formed part of the original 27-hole Laguna course, this is a more open course that its neighbours, although holes 3 to 7 wind between pine trees. The course is a super compliment to the other courses in Vilamoura that we will be playing.
Quinta da Lago – North Course
The North Course was totally redesigned in 2014, by the renowned architect Beau Welling, in conjunction with former European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley. The new layout has been built to the highest specifications, with an investment of €9million. All the greens, tees, bunkers, irrigation and drainage systems and buggy paths have been re-built using innovative technology. Four sets of tees have been introduced on each hole to accommodate players of all levels. Golfers are challenged by a combination of undulating greens, well-positioned bunkers and water hazards. A low-cut Bermuda grass approach has been introduced around greens to create recovery shot options, therefore encouraging all levels of play. Through the introduction of seasonal rough grass and the planting of specimen trees, the aesthetics and environmental impact of the par-72 course has significantly improved.
Quinta da Lago – Laranjal Course
The Quinta do Lago’s Laranjal course is one of the finest courses in the Algarve and a favourite with clients in recent years. The course, which was originally an orange grove, is a sanctuary for fine golf. The narrow fairways and the well defined greens require concentration and accuracy to navigate what is a testing course laid out on a rolling and distinctive terrain. It is a par 72, 6,480 metres long, with five par 5s, eight par 4s and five par 3s, all set amongst umbrella pines, cork-oaks and orange trees, with a natural water course and five beautiful lakes.
Dom Pedro Golf Club – Old Course
Situated in the heart of Vilamoura this Frank Pennink designed Dom Pedro Old Course, is a parkland style layout is one of the oldest in the region and renowned all over the golfing world. Often described as the Grande Dame of the Algarve courses, it meanders throughout impressive pine trees, the principal hazard, over gently undulating natural terrain. Although it opened in 1969, the course was completely renovated and modernised 27 years later although no major changes were made to the magnificent layout. This is one of the courses in Portugal that will always stay in the memory of visiting golfers.
Quinta da Lago – South Course
Opened in 1974, Quinta do Lago South has hosted the ‘Portuguese Open Championship’ eight times, together with many other important professional and amateur championships. The course is set in a natural setting surrounded by umbrella pines, lakes and wild vegetation, with the stunning Ria Formosa nature reserve as the backdrop. Each hole has generous landing areas off the tees and well-defined routes through the woodland and pine setting.
