• Overview

Until a couple of years ago, Tavira was the traditional home of the January ‘Algarve Golf Week,’ and with its quaint old style Algarve charm it is easy to understand why. It is now time to return, after two years in Spain. As mentioned above, we will explore different restaurants each evening and enjoy some excellent food and wine. Indeed the ‘Algarve Golf Week’ in many respects is all about the camaraderie of the clients who book. We will play five super rounds of golf, enjoy our evenings together and soak up the ambience of Tavira, but it is friendships renewed and newly made that make the week such a success year after year. If you want a week in the company of like minded people, some excellent golf, good food and a really fun social week, then the ‘Algarve Golf Week’ is very much what you are after.

With regards to the golf, Quinta de Cima is a superbly designed golf course, with both interesting and challenging golf holes. With a gently undulating landscape, the excellent condition of the course and stunning sea views, the overall experience is just what one would want from a great holiday course. The Quinta da Ria course is built around natural Olive and almond groves and provides a good examination of one’s golf game, especially with the cleverly placed water features. Benamor Golf Club is a favourite with many clients. With superb views over both sea and mountains, the first five holes are fairly short, which can lull you into a feeling of ease, but then the course shows its true test of golf, with some challenging par3’s and par 5’s. With two rounds each on the Quinta courses, this will allow a true appreciation of the quality of these courses. The travel time to each course is also very short indeed, thus allowing for a relaxing week, with excellent golf, a trusted hotel and great company.

    The Vila Gale Tavira Hotel

Situated on the banks of the Ria Formosa, in the centre of Tavira, the Vila Galé Tavira hotel offers everything we need. Its décor recreates an Arabian ambience, in keeping with the region’s history. Facilities include an outdoor pool and a spa. The air-conditioned rooms are decorated with dark wooden furniture, tiled floors, and large windows. All rooms have satellite TV, a minibar, and a work desk. The hotel’s two restaurants serve traditional Portuguese dishes as well as international cuisine. The hotel’s bar offers local wines, and cocktails prepared on the spot with fresh fruit. We can also relax at the Satsanga Spa, which features a heated indoor pool, a Turkish bath and a gym. Many shops, restaurants and bars are within walking distance of the hotel.

    Quinta da Ria Golf Club

The Quinta da Ria course is a wonderful golf course located on a cliff overlooking the most beautiful inlet of the Ria Formosa nature reserve and the Atlantic Ocean. The absence of building sites and excellent green keeping make it an excellent golf course to play and to enjoy the spectacular views. The course comprises of two loops of 9 holes. Five lakes present various challenges as the round unfolds. The greens are undulating and well protected by bunkers. More than 300 trees, such as olive and carob trees have been transplanted in order to maintain the ancient border of the Quinta da Ria Golf Course and the typical features of the region landscape.

    Quinta de Cima Golf Club

Compared to Quinta da Ria, the Quinta de Cima Golf Course looks and plays more like a top tournament course. This is not only a matter of length but also balance and difficulty of holes. From the very first tee of Quinta de Cima we will need to carefully consider our game strategy, with choice of club and ball trajectory. Hazards are definitely very much in play on all holes, whether it is the well designed and cleverly located bunkers or the water hazards in the shape of lakes, streams and ditches.

    Benamor Golf Club

Desgined by Sir Henry Cotton, Benamor Golf is a superb 18-hole Golf Course located on the South of Portugal, Algarve, just a few kilometres east of the ancient city of Tavira. The fairways of Bermuda Sahara and cool-season grasses, provide good lies for wood and iron shots. The golf course was completed in the spring of 2000. In the nearby foothills of Barrocal, you will enjoy some of the best mountain and sea views the Algarve has to offer. But maybe most enjoyable of all, are the peaceful surroundings of a construction free resort. Possibly the only one on the Algarve.

Monte Rei Golf Club – Option to play

Award winning golf designer and legend, Jack Nicklaus has created a golfing masterpiece at Monte Rei, the first of his ‘Signature Courses’ to reach the Algarve and Portugal, and one of very few in Europe. The par 72 championship course plays over 6,500 metres, meandering over gentle hills and valleys, in what Nicklaus believes “a great setting with awesome views”. The presentation of the course is highly individual, from the shape of the holes to the cut of the bunkering. The attention to detail is quite unbelievable, making each hole as remarkable as the next. Not only is the golf course superb, but the service at the Golf Club simply sets the bar at the highest point. From the moment we arrive, we will embark on an experience that we will not forget.
