First day of our Golf Week we were off to our favourite Quinta da Cima, weather forecast as in England, wrong it was great! Light breeze to keep everyone honest and greens quick as a tournament was being held there. 4BBB and some good play all round despite first day stiffness and eventual winners, James and Robert with 37 well earned points. Chris our resident bookmaker organised a sweepstake on how many pars as a group we would have and Ian won with a very erudite guess of 54. Another highlight was Robert having 3 birdies in a row on the front nine, which set the scene for his excellent golf throughout the week.
Second day Castro Marim, An interesting layout and we went for a competition favourite, Waltzing Matilda – 1, 2, 3. Trish, Chris and Ian played very well to 71pts on a tricky day and triumphed quite comfortably. Steady play by Trish was key to the win and the guys sparked to life on certain holes.
An excellent third day at Quinta da Cima. The rhythm of the weather was now in full swing and shirt sleeves by 10.00am was the order of the day. Cima was in excellent condition, just having hosted a Professional event, so their brisk greens even brisker. DSG stalwart Neville was in particularly good form today, cutting a dash in his white trousers (let’s face it you have to play well if you wear them!). Newcomers to our family Ian and Robert impressed with their golf both driving the ball particularly well.
A busy few days so the day off on Wednesday was going to be a good chance to explore or just some old fashioned r&r.
Fourth day at Benamor Golf Club. Another beautiful day and off to one of the older venues in the Algarve, Benamor. This compact course with excellent putting surfaces offers an interesting challenge. We decided to go for an individual event today with 2 x 9 hole competitions and an inevitable sweep which today was on the total points scored by the group. It was 198 and James took the loot. On the front 9 Trish put an excellent 19 points together to pip Ian by a point. On the back 9 Neville lost out on the back 6 to Robert with both on 15 points. We had an excellent lunch on their lovely clubhouse terrace.
Fifth day Quinta da Ria. We finish our tour at the glorious QdR today and opted for an individual stableford. I always feel on these courses anything above 30points is excellent. So Robert’s 35 points was first class. As ever a gentle sea breeze keeps you concentrating round Ria and some great shots were played all round. Some excellent driving I thought off the beautifully manicured tees was a feature of everyone’s golf.
A great week with some amazing weather and an eager group of golfers by day and brilliant dinner companions each evening.
Hope to see you on a fairway soon.
All the best
