David Short Golf

David Short

I learned my golf in Lincolnshire and turned Professional in 1968 at the age of 17. I was the Assistant Professional at Sleaford Golf Club for one year and in 1969 moved to the Budock Vean Hotel & Golf Club in Cornwall.

In 1971, I played tournaments and spent ten months as the Assistant Professional at Temple Golf Club in Henley on Thames, before being offered my first full Professional’s position at Perranporth Golf Club in Cornwall in 1972.  In 1973, I was appointed the Head Professional at Falmouth Golf Club, Cornwall where I remained until 1994.

During my early years in Cornwall I played various tournaments on the PGA Tour and West Country PGA events, creating several course records along the way, but always found myself in great demand to teach.  Following the 1978 PGA Championship at Royal Birkdale (Nick Faldo’s first win I believe) I decided to dedicate my career to teaching.

Having moved to Cornwall and as a PGA Professional in a resort town, I had become involved in the golf tourism industry.  It was this experience and my love of teaching that brought ‘David Short Golf’ to fruition.

I gave thousands of the usual half hour and one hour lessons to members, locals and visiting golfers throughout the years.  There were several male and female County Champions and quite a few of the Falmouth juniors joined the PGA ranks over the years that I was at Falmouth and I would like to think I helped them all in their achievements in some little way.

In the late 70’s and 80’s I ran West Country Sports Council teaching weeks and group coaching for a Swedish language school throughout the summer holidays.  I established the David Short Golf Schools and in association with local hotels and ran residential golf schools and several competition weeks each year.

In 1985, I took my first Golf Schools abroad to Portugal and in 1986 the UK Schools commenced in other parts of the country.  These were extended to Tenerife and Florida over the next few years and a Portugal school was featured on the BBC Holiday Programme in 1995.

By 1996, David Short Golf Schools had become my full time occupation. Staverton Park became my main UK venue throughout the summer and La Quinta Club, Marbella my winter base.

The year of 1999 saw the birth of the ‘Golf & Coaching’ holidays as opposed to the more intensive Golf Schools.  These took place at the exotic location of Doha Golf Club in Qatar, now a fixture each year on the European Tour.

In the year 2000, the Mail on Sunday produced a double page feature of David Short Golf Schools.  In 2001, long haul Escorted Tours were introduced with the first of many tours to South Africa.  It was around this time my association with Iain Tym who owns Countrywide Golf Holidays began.  While I had run many UK and European golf weeks I did not have the expertise in this field.  I therefore continued to run my schools in Spain and the UK and Iain began to arrange the long haul Golf & Coaching events and Escorted Tours, which I would then host.

By 2007, we had greatly expanded our venues and countries for both the Golf & Coaching weeks and the Escorted Tours.  With Iain providing the research, booking and administrative support to all our overseas events, I was able to focus on providing a more varied programme of teaching on the Golf & Coaching events and take the Escorted Tours to all four corn ers of the world.  Indeed from 2008 to the present day, we have taken clients to mainland China, Hong Kong, British Columbia in Canada, Mauritius, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Cyprus, Italy, France, Ireland and Scotland and of course the old favourites of Portugal and Spain!

As to the future, far from pulling back, I am excited at introducing a new Academy Schools concept at Staverton Park, moving our Portuguese Golf & Coaching events to the Robinson Club in Portugal and exploring pastures new with the Escorted Tours.  Over recent years, two fellow PGA Professionals who I have known for many years, Barney Puttick and Aaron Shepherd, have help shape the development for the future.  Both Barney and Aaron share my passion for teaching and to help golfers of all levels learn, improve and enjoy their golf, whether it is at home or in various locations around the world.  Between us we will create an exciting and varied programme for years to come.
