Another much enjoyed golf week at the La Cala Resort on the Costa del Sol and Ronnie Hirst set the week off in great style with a hole in one on the Europa course 16th hole the first day. Five of the attendees had been in Madeira with Barney last November when a brace of ones were registered by Ronnie’s husband, David and Barney himself!
The first days team competition was won by Rosemary, Pat, Arnold and Paul O over the aforementioned Europa course and Rosemary, Maureen, Jeff and myself were victorious in the yellow ball event on the America course second day, but only on the back nine from Catherine, Ali, Paul O and Colin.
With an almost equal mix of gender a competition between the ladies and gents took place over the Asia course mid week. Rosemary (yet again) and Julia produced a fine 46 pts which rather wiped the smile off the faces of the gents pairing of Arnold and Tony on 42. Needless to say the ladies ran out clear winners overall 158 to 146.
Following a so called rest day, whereby several showed up not in the fittest state for the individual Stableford Thursday morning, Julia’s 41 points (awarded with a three shot reduction in handicap) claimed the first prize from Gillian with 39. Leading gent, was Jeff 35, which led to the usual discussion of favourable ladies tees!
A free draw for a final day mixed 4 BBB created some well matched pairings and a difficult result to predict. However, Ali and Jeff triumphed with a remarkable 47pts leaving Maureen and Tony, Julia and Richard licking their wounds with very creditable 43’s. Maybe the fact that the one gents pairing finished joint last lends weight to the ladies tee discussions – but I wouldn’t wish to make any controversial comments!!
This resort has proved a favourite with with our clientele and a return in 2017 is a certainty and highly recommended. The limited places will be on a first come basis, so at least get your provisional booking in early.
See you soon
