Our long overdue return to this area was much enjoyed and there is little to say except – Top Drawer!
The Pestana Cascais Apart Hotel is not five star, but spotlessly clean, large rooms and very central. Although I know some would like a little more luxury, when you are out most of the day and again in the evening sampling excellent restaurants, is there really that much time to take advantage of it? And do bear in mind the much larger single supplements at the five star resorts. Cascais itself is a lovely town with a plethora of restaurants, shops and things to do on the free day, with Lisbon only a short train ride away along the coast.
Our thanks to Petra our tour co-ordinator whose advice and help in booking buggies for our golf week was perfect as was her choice of recommended restaurants.
As for the golf, well superb! Unfortunately, as with La Cala the previous week we didn’t enjoy the normal weather for this time of year while Britain was bathed in sunshine, but apart from the odd shower, in the main stayed dry, if a little cooler than usual. However, the golf more than made up for it. Three courses of our five had hosted the Portuguese Open on many occasions and all presented in fine condition, not overly long and, a real feature – many beautiful par three holes of a sensible length!
We played team events at Quinta da Marinha, Estoril Palacio and the splendid links at Oitavia Dunes. Ivan is obviously a team player being in all three winning teams!
The 4BBB played at the lovely Belas GC situated back in the hills and boasting spectacular scenery was slightly spoiled by a cool wind, but not for Vanessa and I who claimed a sound victory!
The final day took us to Penha Longa Resort. Another spectacular setting in the hills of Sintra, set amongst pines and many changes in elevation, while the lush semi rough required conservative club selection! John, who was showing signs of returning to form over the last few holes the previous day at Octavia Dunes, won convincingly and returned home with a very smart Penha Longa Nike shirt!
All those attending, without exception, called for a repeat next year and Iain will shortly be announcing those dates. It’s maybe a good time remind you that the Porto Tour in October is almost full too.
See you soon
