Hello from the Algarve, and the Dona Filipa Resort to be exact. I am with a number of clients hosting two consecutive golf weeks at the Resort, playing San Lorenzo and Pinheiros Altos, and I believe everyone attending is enjoying the event so far.
With the PGA Tour and European Tour now in full swing, with two World Championship events already played and The Masters just about upon us, we appear to have an enthralling season ahead. Dustin Johnson has come out with a transformed wedge game and won three times in a row. McIlroy is knocking on the door every time out despite being rusty from his injury lay off and any time he gets his putter working looks like he will blow away the field (even Dustin); lets hope it happens at Augusta and he becomes the first European and only the sixth player in history to win all four majors!
This month I will be on a hectic tour schedule too. Starting in the Algarve with the second of our two Dona Filipa weeks, back to the UK for the Easter Golf & Coaching weekend, which is run jointly by myself and Barney, before travelling to Gran Canaria, La Cala on the Costa del Sol and then returning to the Algarve for my final overseas Golf & Coaching Week of the winter and spring season at the Robinson Club in Tavira. There are a few places available on these events. While I will be grateful for the break from travelling, Italy beckons in late June and I can think of no better reason than that to have to repack a suitcase! Italy is hardly a hidden gem, but maybe the golf is and its not to late to join us there. I know those that have travelled with us the past few years have loved it and you will not be disappointed either.
A couple of months ago I asked if anyone had any good hole in one stories, well what about this one from Liz Bird. Playing in the knockout stages of the Cornish Ladies Championship at Trevose she knocked her tee shot in the hole on the 21st to progress to the next round. Maybe I did teach her something in the distant past!
I was watching the PGA Tour golf on TV the other night when they panned to the practice range as a player was being interviewed. Tyrrel Hatton was in the background hitting a few balls. With the emphasis on a FEW! He hit just three shots while the camera was on him for about the time it would take the average club golfer to empty a whole bucket!! Practice is about quality not quantity and if you want to benefit from some practice take good note of that example. If you just bash balls down the range, firstly you will just ruin your rhythm and secondly, change nothing, but instead ingrain the faults you are trying to eradicate a little more!
Here is to some sun on our backs and the start of a successful season for you all, and I very much hope to see you at some point during the season.
I am also back in sunny Portugal having already enjoyed three weeks in the Eastern Algarve from the beginning of March. Our golf week staying in Olhao was blessed with super weather and a fun group of players on and off the course. Our Golf and Coaching week at Robinsons was more challenging on the weather front, however our intrepid DSG team did really well and everyone left with plenty of positives for their golf.
My final assignment was with a group from Mrs P’s golf club and we played the lovely Laranjal and marvellous Monte Rei, with a spot of fine tuning on their games at Robinsons in between. Along with plenty of prosecco appreciation in the evenings, it made for a fun few days.
As with all of us I’m really looking forward to the Masters. It is like a Christmas for golfers, in that it comes at the same time of year and gives us those feelings of exciting and anticipation. This year it does look rather an open and shut case for Dustin Johnson to win, however form in golf is a funny thing and it only takes for the great man to be slightly off and one of the amazing players there to be on fire and voila, Rory, Ricky or Danny will win!
I thought I would include an analysis piece that I did on Danny Willet’s swing for Golf Monthly Magazine as he has excellent technique. The weight of expectation, both his own and the press has weighed him down since last year, so I am hoping revisiting Augusta will inspire him and get him back on track for 2017.
Speaking of getting our games in good shape, our UK programme begins this Easter at Staverton Park, Daventry and continues over the Spring / Summer. It is an excellent venue and the golf course is in super shape. So if you are looking to tune up your game in terms of your technique and course management, see if any of the 3 or 4 day sessions will work for you. A few days covering all aspects of this great game, really sets you up to perform well in your own personal Masters!
Enjoy watching and playing golf in the coming month
Good luck with your golf
I trust that you are well and enjoying the hints of spring that are increasingly frequent now.
Many thanks to everyone who has travelled over the last few months and we very much hope that the trips have been enjoyable and memorable. I am always amazed by the passage of time. I was asked this week whether we had embarked on a tour to Bali, “Yes” I said, “We were there 18 months ago”. I then looked back at the programme and it was November 2014! Where oh where does the time go?!
Looking forward, as David has alluded to, we do still have places available on the Gran Canaria Golf Week (22nd April), the La Cala Golf Week (29th April) and the Algarve Golf & Coaching Week in Tavria (6th May). If spring does gain that desired foothold and you are tempted by a week away, please let us know.
With regards to the UK season, the Golf Academy, Golf & Coaching and UK Golf Tour events are now beginning to fill up. The availability of these events is as follows:
29th April UK Golf & Coaching Weekend: 8 places available
14th May UK Golf Academy: 4 places available
27th May UK Golf Academy: 7 places available
3rd June UK Golf & Coaching Weekend: 12 places available
4th June Dorset Golf Tour: 14 places available
1st July UK Golf & Coaching Weekend: 12 places available
30th July Lincolnshire Golf Tour: 1 place available
5th August UK Golf & Coaching Weekend: 7 places available
7th August Lincolnshire Golf Tour 2: 2 places available
20th August Herefordshire Golf Tour: 11 places available
26th August UK Golf & Coaching Weekend: 11 places available
As David mentioned, we do also have places still available on the Piedmont Golf Tour to Italy in June. Please note that with this tour you can fly into Milan and out of either Turin or Milan. There are more flights out of Milan than Turin, and transfers will be provided to both airport.
With regards to the autumn programme, we have places available on all of the events. The Tenerife Golf & Coaching Week is proving the most popular of the autumn events so far; hence if you were interested in this particular event, please book soon, as the numbers are limited on this trip.
A word too on the Christmas and New Year trips. Although we have places available on David’s Christmas tour and both David and Barney’s New Year tours, the places do get taken very quickly; hence early booking is always recommended for this events.
We try to keep the diary of events available to a year ahead (note the word ‘try’!), and with this in mind we will imminently be launching the two January events, one Golf & Coaching and one Golf Week, both of which are in Spain. We will also be launching two long-haul February tours, one to South Africa which David will host (Fancourt, Cape Town, the Winelands and the Garden Route) and one to Thailand which Barney will host (Phuket, Bangkok and Hua Hin). We will let you know once these tours have been launched.
If you have any queries or require further information about any of the events, please do not hesitate to contact me.
We will be in touch again in a months’ time, but in the meantime, enjoy the Masters, have a super Easter and let’s hope for the true onset of spring.
With best regards,
All the best
Over the winter we have been looking for ways to improve the website for you and you will now find the maximum number of clients we can take on each event. I also spend time “badgering” David and Barney for their website blog pieces when they return from a trip, so please add your comments of the events that you attend and upload any pictures that you would like to share.
If you have any ideas for improvements to the website please let us know and we will see if we can accommodate them.
Finally, can you please add the davidshortgolf email address to your list of safe addresses as we are encountering difficulties with email delivery especially with btinternet addresses.
Hope you are all enjoying your golf wherever you are.
