Our annual Algarve Golf Week based at the Vila Gale in Tavira was again blessed with glorious weather. As usual at this time of year mornings and evenings were cool, however blue skies and shirt sleeves were the order of the day for the most part on the golf course. The Vila Gale looked after us very well as usual and is ideally situated to walk into town for a delicious Portuguese custard tart and coffee following golf and dinner in the evenings. Many restaurants are closed at this time of year but our favourite over the years, Brisas do Rio was worthy of three visits and if ever in Tavira look no further. Great menu, value, food and service.
As several people were travelling to South Africa with us from the 6th February they decided to take a break Wed to Wed and were departing mid week, so we played our main competitions over the first three days. Steve, playing off 9, had spent the previous week at the Golf & Coaching event and the fruits of his labour were clear to see!
Benamor was the venue for the first days golf and the mixed 4BBB scoring was very good. Runners up, Paula and Mike, might have won most days with 42 pts, however, 44 saw Vivienne and Steve at the top of the list.
A best two from three team event at Quinta da Ria on the second day and Steve again, Carol-Ann and Phil were winners on 77.
Everyone had their story of putting woes at Quinta da Cima on lightly sanded championship greens. It is easy to blame the green keeper but in truth the contours here were the winners. The skill of the best players positioning their approach shots, chips and pitches to make for easier putts, along with a deft touch with the putter should not be under estimated! The scoring was reflected in the putting and Steve made it a hat trick of wins with 30 points a clear winner from Mike 27. Trisha won the Ladies with 27 and Hazel in only her second year of playing runner up with a commendable 26 on this tough layout.
For the final two days the numbers worked out evenly to play mixed 4BBB. Mike took over Steve’s mantle and won both! He and Vivienne 43 pts from Paula and Neville, 41, first day and with Hazel on our final day with 41 to Trish and Neville’s 39.
Running along side the final days competition we had Neville’s swindle which it truly turned out to be!! Having suggested we all put a little cash in the pot Neville won the individual swindle with a commendable 35 from Mike 33. Lesley leading the ladies and Trish runner up.
Another excellent week on the Algarve, as always played in the most convivial atmosphere. A big thank you once again to our extended family for making it so.
Our next Golf Tour Week is from the Suites at San Roque Golf Club 21-28 March and playing the Old twice, the New, Almanara and La Reserva. First class accommodation on a half board basis and golf from the top draw. We hope you can join us!
Wishing you good golfing in the coming season
