Another splendid Christmas at the Robinson Club, Tavira, on the Eastern Algarve was enjoyed by our group of 18. Blessed by wall to wall sunshine, no more than a ” club” wind through out the week and golf courses in the best condition I have seen on the Algarve for several years made for perfect golfing conditions.
The Robinson Club never fails to impress returnees and new guests alike with the high standards of friendly service, amenities and particularly the cuisine of their all inclusive package. Even free pull carts, bottled water and sandwiches for the golf course are included.
Three special nights of Christmas activities including shows in the theatre, dancing to live bands and for “foodies” the Wild boar and goose of Christmas Day amongst a wonderful array of dishes, including desserts to “die for” is especially appetising! And, it can all be walked off by strolling through the golf course down to the hotels beach bar and along the unspoilt beach or cliff tops.
As for the golf, we played two team events and two four ball better balls with a final day individual stableford. Along side this, for a few euro on the side, we ran a 72 hole stableford.
Benamor, with its English feel, one of the oldest and lesser known courses on the Algarve was in lovely condition and Neville, Dougie and Alan were winners with a fine 82 pts. Andy taking the lead in the individual on 36 pts.
Quinta de Cima was the scene of the second days team event and this tougher test was won with 79 points by Helen, Jean, Julian and Dougie. After two rounds Dougie, Andy and Kenneth tied the individual on 65 pts each.
A mixed 4 BBB for day 3 on the scenic Quinta da Ria course saw a tie on 36 pts between Jane and Peter who defeated Jean and Dougie on the back nine. Andy snuck 2 points ahead of Dougie and Kenneth in the individual event.
Christmas Eve we visited what is surely the gem of the Algarve, Monte Rei. Like the Robinson Club their exacting standards never drop and while golf is arguably too expensive at many courses these days, if one course is worth the price, it is Monte Rei. Peter again proved the king of 4 ball golf and he and Sue pipped Helen and Martin 37 to 36. No individual today but Peter and Sue won the battle of the Roses with a comfortable win over Yorkshires representatives Alan and Julian!!
Following a rest on Christmas Day our final round, an individual stableford was played on Quinta da Ria where Neville, who had kept a low profile after day one, burst out of the pack with an excellent 38 points to beat Mike by two. Dougie, after a quiet start, put together a solid 34 pts. to beat Kenneth by two with overnight leader Andy a further shot back and pick up the winners cash! Jane was leading lady in the individual with a commendable 32 that kept her ahead of Jo and also win the ladies 72 hole sweep.
Fourteen of the group moved on to Vilamoura to see in the New Year following our third highly successful week at Robinson Club where reservations have already been made for Xmas 2015.
